Chokers are a beloved emblem of '90s fashion. Since '90s styles have been coming back around again and because she was born in 1992, it makes sense that Selena Gomez's white dress had a choker built in to its construction. The dress was certainly statement-making, thanks to the plunging V, which showed off lots of cleavage. But I was found the thick choker, which even had its own button, to be the most interesting element of her flirty frock.
Can Gomez make chokers happen again? Is it a choker "revival?" Perhaps.
Gomez wore the eggshell mini, which also showed off her killer legs, to the Spirit of Life event. She tossed her Pantene-endorsed black hair into a messy updo and slicked on orange-y red lipstick. But other than that, the dress remained the central focus of her look, as it should have been.
The long sleeves balanced out the general legginess of the look. Also, the deep V was sexy and all. But without the choker, it would have been just another mini dress with a super revealing neckline.
The frock was Gomez's modernized take on a '90s style. Of course she killed it. When doesn't she? Gomez rarely flubs on the red carpet and when getting dressed up.
Gomez was gorgeous in this cream-colored confection. From the front view, it almost looked like a fanciful coat dress.
The dress was embellished with lots of buttons. What a simple but effective touch.
You can see how the high-backed choker is built into the dress.
The single tendril falling towards her face was a dramatic and accidental touch.
This dress made the case for chokers everywhere and all of the time. The hem was dangerously short but playful.
Gomez really did dare to bare. But she did so with the kind of confidence you cannot manufacture.
The choker was thick so opting for an updo so she could show off her neck was a fantastic idea.
Chokers come in many shapes and styles and you can incorporate them into any look. The choker does not to be an actual part of the dress in order to be eye-catching.
If you have any plans to rock an LBD this holiday season, because duh, you can totally add an extra thick black choker like the one pictured above. That will allow you to achieve your own version of the Selena Gomez choker effect with your party dress. ($20, etsy.com)
