You Probably Forgot About These '90s Bands

by Emily Lackey

I don’t think there is anything that I love more than the ‘90s. Maybe pizza, maybe my dog — but even they sometimes disappoint me. The ‘90s, however? They never disappointed me. I mean, other than that I could never get Justin Timberlake to love me back, and that I would eventually forgot so many of the awesome songs from that decade, but you know... can I be blamed for being disappointed by those things. Justin was hot, and there were so many good songs! It was impossible to keep them straight in my head. How could I make enough space in my heart for my severe Alanis Morissette obsession, my love for Timberlake, and all of those one hit wonders that defined the formative years of my life? Something had to go in my mind, and all of those amazing '90s bands that shot to the top of the chart and then quickly disappeared were what unfortunately did not make the cut.

I’m sure it’s the same for you. You listen to a song that you haven’t heard since 1995, and you think, “Oh man, I forgot about these guys!” So, if you like being reminded, you’re in luck. I’ve compiled a list of 19 ‘90s bands you have definitely forgotten in the last 15 years of your life.

You’re going to want to put your headphones on for this.

1. Gin Blossoms

You probably remember “Hey Jealousy,” but the rest of their catalogue? A total blur of flannel and grungy hair.

2. BoDeans

You listened to these guys every week at the beginning of every episode of Party of Five, but you probably never listened to them outside of that. Let’s be real.

3. Goo Goo Dolls

These guys are probably lost in a haze of pop music and awesome Aerosmith videos in your mind, but you’ll definitely remember their 1998 hit “Iris.”

4. The Wallflowers

Known for “One Headlight” and for being related to Bob Dylan. At least, the lead singer, Jakob Dylan (aka Bob Dylan's son), is.

5. Soul Asylum

I remember being terrified by this song and thinking that it was about kids who had been kidnapped, so I’m pretty sure I repressed the memory and never listened to it again.

6. Mighty Mighty Bosstones

You probably rocked out to “The Impression That I Get” and that one song on the Clueless soundtrack.

7. The Toadies

That video for “Possum Kingdom”? Terrifying.

8. Everclear

Tell me this doesn’t bring back all of the ‘90s feels you ever felt?

9. Ini Kamoze

Here come the Hotstepper, y’all.

10. Lisa Loeb

Actually, you may have forgotten Lisa Loeb, but I never did. I still listen to “Stay” on the daily. Don’t judge.

11. Spacehog

Like you didn’t sing along to this, too, even though you probably didn’t know any of the words. (Seriously, what is that guy saying?)

12. OMC

How bizarre were these guys and this strange video?

13. Semisonic

Is it wrong that I still like to close out my party playlists with Semisonic’s famous single “Closing Time”?

14. Kriss Kross

You guys. They wore their pants backwards. How could you ever forget about them?

15. Joan Osborne

Osborne asked us all, “What if God was one of us?” We may have been too young to really contemplate that question, but you probably felt super deep trying.

16. Eagle Eye Cherry

“Save Tonight” totally became your anthem in middle school. Admit it.

17. The Divinyls

Totally ahead of their time, the Divinyls were all about self-love with their one hit wonder “I Touch Myself.”

18. Deep Blue Something

I’m sure you remember “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” but you probably do not remember the name of the band that sang it.

19. Scatman John

He’s the Scatman, guys. Don’t ever doubt that.

And if you’re sitting there after listening to all of these songs, paralyzed by the awesomeness of this ‘90s throwback, you’re not alone. I’m going to go watch Singled Out reruns and Wayne’s World at the same time to shake me out of this.
