It's not a secret that quite a bit of your makeup choices are based around your skin's undertone. Not only that, undertones can also influence what colors you choose to dye your hair, and surprisingly, according to Kim Kardashian's makeup artist, lip undertones also impact your look. While artist Mario Dedivanovic doesn't recommend limiting your lip colors based on your tone, he does suggest that certain hues may appear different on varying lip undertones — but how can your lip's undertone specifically affect your look?
The idea of a lip undertone makes quite a bit of sense to me, actually. I've own both Dior Addict Lip Glow and Clinique's famous Black Honey. Both of these products adjust to your own natural color, so it's not a huge stretch to think that tone could be affecting what colors these lippies become on different people. According to Dedivanovic,"Natural lip undertones can affect the way a lip product looks, especially if the product is sheer because the undertones will show through."
The most likely effect of a lip undertone seems to be when you choose to rock a certain type of product, not just any color. Once Dedivanovic has said that, everything seem to fall into place. Your natural lip color will show through a sheer lip, and thus, it impacts the way that product looks on you.
While Dedivanovic does explain that lip tones come in warm, neutral, and cool, he does insist that it shouldn't determine what lipsticks you wear. In fact, the tone can be canceled out by foundation or concealer applied to the lips. He says, "This will provide a good base for your lip product and really help the true color of the shade to show." So no matter what your undertone is, rock whatever lip color you want!
