Sometimes, it's more cruel to dangle hope in front of fans than just rip our favorite band-aids off. You may have heard, and major spoilers galore if you haven't, but it seemed like Glenn died on The Walking Dead, all thanks to dumb Nicholas. Supposedly, we saw his guts being ripped out before his eyes, too. It was gross, and my feels haven't recovered yet. That said, according to the series' producers, his story isn't over yet. So how could Glenn return to The Walking Dead, considering what we all just saw?
There were a lot of parallels to Glenn's first episode, from him calling Rick "dumbass" over the radio to Rick getting trapped in a vehicle at the end. This makes it seem like Glenn's death is significant and will stick. However, during Talking Dead, Chris Hardwick read the following statement from executive producer Scott Gimple:
Dear fans of The Walking Dead, This is a hard story to tell, and when we were planning to tell it we knew our friends at Talking Dead would be talking to you about it, and knowing you’d all be talking and feeling and commiserating, I kew we should say something about it, lest our silence say something we didn’t mean to say or not say, so I’ll say this. In some way, we will see Glenn, some version of Glenn, or parts of Glenn again, either in flashback or in the current story, to help complete the story.
What could that possibly mean? Let's go through all of the options.
He's Alive!
This is the most optimistic outcome, and it's actually not that crazy. Nicholas fell on top of him. It could have been Nicholas' guts that Glenn was seeing. His dead body could end up saving Glenn the way Glenn saved him. However, I feel like that's only going to buy him some time, since there was a huge horde of walkers in that alley.
He's Dead!
I'm a little bit worried about how the others are going to mourn Glenn if his body is buried under a herd, so maybe the show will address that question. We could just see his body or body parts again. It's gross, but at least we would know for certain.
He's Undead!
If they make me watch Glenn as a Walker, I swear to Father Gabriel that I will lose my mind. That would just be pouring salt into a wound. Who's narrative purpose would it serve to see a Walker Glenn? Could he eat someone? Nothing seems just, in my humble opinion.
He's... In A Flashback
I guess this could be what they mean. In the comics, Maggie is pregnant when Glenn dies, though his death occurs under extremely different circumstances. That would be reason for a flashback, but it might also be too much to handle, emotionally. Basically, unless he's either alive and able to escape or definitely dead and gone, there is no way this can end well for Glenn on The Walking Dead.
