When Will We Hear Adele's New Single?
The guessing game is finally over: Adele's new album, 25, premieres Nov. 20. The 27-year-old British diva confirmed the long-awaited LP's release date on Instagram Thursday by posting a stunning new photo (which may or may not be the album cover) with the succinct caption, "25 out November 20th." And then, of course, the Internet exploded. (Adele news tends to have that effect on the Internet.) But wait, there's more: A rumored 25 track list is floating around Twitter right now. But wait, there's still more: It was also just revealed that Adele's new single, "Hello," drops Friday (as in, tomorrow), along with its accompanying music video. According to the "Rolling In the Deep" hit-maker's U.K. record label, XL Recordings, the "Hello" visual was directed by Canadian actor and filmmaker Xavier Dolan. This is almost too much for me to handle! Adele is back, everybody... and it feels so, so good.
So, what does "Hello" sound like? And what are its lyrics about?
On Sunday, Adele unexpectedly previewed a new song that is likely "Hello" on U.K. television. Based on the 30-second snippet, the upcoming tune seems to be a piano-led ballad — but, of course, it could go in a lot of different directions after the clip ends.
For example, I have a sinking suspicion that its chorus is going to be immense. (Perhaps the tempo will pick up at some point, too.) Here are the "Hello" lyrics we have so far:
Hello, it's me
I was wondering if after all these years you'd like to meet
To go over everything
They say that time's supposed to heal ya
But I ain't done much healing
Wow. "Someone Like You Part Two," anyone? Though my initial thought was that Adele is addressing a former lover in "Hello," there are other possibilities, as well. For instance, the song could be about meeting up with her estranged father, Mark Evans. According to the Huffington Post UK, Evans "left the family home" when Adele was just three years old, but he started building a relationship with her when was a teenager. However, after Evans sold a story about Adele to the Sun newspaper in March 2011, the singer vowed that they were through.
"He’s f---ing blown it. He will never hear from me again. Because there is nothing that would upset me more than my dad being bribed by the press," she told Vogue in a February 2012 interview, just shortly after the premiere of her last album, 21. "If I ever see him I will spit in his face," she concluded. Ouch.
We don't know if Adele has tried to reconcile with Evans since then, but it's certainly a possibility. However, even if "Hello" has nothing to do with her father, something tells me it's not about a breakup. After all, returning from an extended hiatus with a tear-soaked breakup ballad is exactly what everyone expects Adele to do, and I think she may want to surprise us. We'll just have to wait and see. It won't be long now!
