Simple Costumes Inspired By Leading Ladies

by Phoebe Avison

Halloween is just over a week away, so you might be panicking about putting together an awesome outfit in a short amount of time. Don't worry: I've got you covered with simple Halloween costumes for lazy girls inspired by your favorite leading ladies. There's still plenty of time left to order what you need from online stores or pick up some pieces from your favorite fast fashion destinations. So if you don't want to break the bank by spending a ton of money on a costume that you'll probably only wear once or you just can't be bothered to spend hours shopping and prepping because you're a lazy girl at heart, these ensembles are for you.

To be honest, Halloween involves a lot of hard work, especially if you're hosting a party. Once upon a time, people would have probably been happy with a punch bowl and a few fake cobwebs strung around the place. These days, however, there appears to be a trend of people hand-crafting their pun-y Halloween decorations, cooking up ghoulish looking yet delicious tasting food, and even entire Halloween parties themed around your favorite movies. Even if you're not hosting a Halloween party yourself, chances are you'll get asked to bring some creepy cuisine or bring it with a one-of-a-kind outfit.

So take a load off and embrace your inner lazy girl this Halloween with these incredibly simple costumes.

1. Marilyn Monroe

Channel a vintage vibe and dress up as iconic blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe. She is most famously known for wearing a white dress in the 1955 movie The Seven Year Itch, which cheekily billowed upwards in a scene where she stands over a subway grate. Here's how to become a Hollywood starlet in three simple steps.

The Dress

Check out this divine tulle dress that would totally be worthy of a Hollywood screen siren.

Great news: The exact same style is available in plus sizes, so everyone can be a vintage vixen this Halloween.

The Wig

Before the height of her popularity, Ms. Monroe was known as Norma Jeane Mortenson and she was a brunette. When she decided to become known as Marilyn Monroe, she changed her look to suit her new identity. A platinum wig is a must for any aspiring Marilyn's out there.

The Lipstick

Marilyn was rarely seen without her signature scarlet pout, so make sure to wear a bright red lipstick to complete your look. Pick an old favorite or if you're running low, this MAC lipstick is the perfect shade for Ms. Monroe.

2. A Glee Cheerleader

If like me, you always wanted to be a cheerleader but your school didn't have a team or immature school politics meant you didn't make the team, then now your childhood dreams can come true. This is a great costume for lovers of cheerleading and Glee since you can literally become a Cheerio. And I'm not talking the cereal.

The Cheerios Uniform

This awesome replica of the Cheerios uniform comes in sizes S to XL and it's a complete package with pom poms.

The Pristine Sneakers

Color coordinate with a pair of white sneakers. Or if you really want to look stylish, invest in some customized sneakers with a touch of sparkle.

The Hair Ties

The Cheerios never had a hair out of place, so these red and white "no tug" hair ties should do the trick.

3. Cruella De Vil

Cruella de Vil is one of the most notorious Disney villainesses of all time. If she existed in reality, she would be animal rights activists' worst nightmare. However, disregarding the animal fur, she did have a unique and quirky style that can be replicated quite easily.

The Wig

Nothing screams Cruella de Vil more than a half and half, monochrome dyed do. Unless you're willing to flaunt such a dramatic look on your own hair, you might want to wear a wig.

The Coat

For a classic Cruella look, opt for an off white faux fur coat. The great thing about this investment piece is that you can wear it long after Halloween.

Alternatively, if you wish to channel Glenn Close in the more modern film adaptations of the classic animation, opt for a spotty faux fur jacket like this one. Whichever style you choose, wear your favorite LBD underneath.

The Gloves

Of course one cannot be a vampy villainess without a pair of silky, red gloves. A pair of red gloves is the best metaphor for having blood on your hands (no doubt a reference to Cruella and her lust for animal hide).

4. The Clueless Costume

Clueless turned 25 this year. To celebrate this iconic movie, why not dress as your favorite '90s Clueless gal?

The Plaid Suit

You can channel leading lady Cher Horowitz in this yellow plaid co-ord set, which is a replica of one of her most famous outfits.

If you fancy putting your own spin on the Clueless look, choose a co-ord set in a different shade such as this pretty pink, plus size ensemble.

The Thigh High Socks

The Clueless girls were always accessorizing with over the knee socks, so make sure to add a pair to your outfit.

Plus size ladies can even get two for the price of one with this money saving set.

5. Sookie Stackhouse

For those who are still mourning the end of True Blood, dressing up as Sookie is super simple. If you're a redhead, or you're just not a fan of Ms. Stackhouse, you could even use this outfit to dress as Arlene Fowler instead.

The Merlotte's T-Shirt

Sookie was a waitress at Merlotte's Bar & Grill, and although the establishment underwent new ownership toward the end of the series, the Merlotte's Bar & Grill uniform is sure to be the most memorable. This shirt is available in sizes Small to XXL.

True Blood Merlotte's Logo Women's Slim Fit T-Shirt, $24.99, store.hbo.com

The Short Shorts

The greatest thing about recreating Sookie's work uniform is that it's ultra comfy, including the shorts.

Show off your lovely legs like Sookie in a pair of plain black, plus size shorts.

The Vampire Bite

In the beginning of the series, Sookie would try to hide her vampire bites with scarves, but as the story progressed, she didn't care about what other people thought of her.

Halloween costumes needn't be overcomplicated; sometimes the simpler they are, the better they look. The fact that you're actually a lazy girl at heart can be our little secret.
