The #1 Relationship Deal Breaker In America Is...

by Kristine Fellizar

We all have list of traits that would automatically disqualify a person from being relationship potential. I, for one, need the guys I date to be clean and smell nice. So, needless to say, a guy who says he’s helping the drought in California by not showering for a week is a major dealbreaker for me. Other dealbreakers for me include guys who lack both ambition and a sense of humor. But apparently I’m not the only one. A new series of studies published in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin put together a list of the 17 biggest relationship dealbreakers for men and women. In all honesty, none of them are all that surprising.

The research team behind the study took a nationally representative sample of 5,541 single American men and women aged 21 to 76-years-old and asked them what they would consider “dealbreakers” when it comes to considering a partner for a committed relationship. As the study found, 67 percent of people found having a “disheveled or unclean appearance” was a major dealbreaker. Rounding out the top three were people who were lazy (66 percent) and people who were too needy (63 percent).

While more women said a partner who lacked confidence and played video games or watched TV too often were dealbreakers, more men thought potential partners who had kids, lived too far away and had low sex drives were no-gos.

According to the study, older people were found to have more dealbreakers than younger ones, which I guess makes sense. After all, older people do have more experience, so they would definitely know what they want and don’t want in a potential partner. Furthermore, women were found to have more dealbreakers than men.

But as the researchers noted, the differences between what men and women said “were modest…which may be unsurprising given that men and women are more alike than different.”

Here are the top 10 relationship dealbreakers, according to 5,500 Americans:
