You'll Love Kiernan Shipka's PFW Look
I really hate getting schooled by a 15 year old in the clothing department, but I will admit there's one teenager who definitely has better style than I do. Most of the world knows her as Sally Draper, but this Mad Men star is making a name for herself in the fashion world. Kiernan Shipka looked totally adorable at Paris Fashion Week and reminded me why it's sometimes fun play with colors, textures and patterns.
The mini style star is wise beyond her years, and that completely extends to her view of the world of fashion. When The Coveteur peeked into Shipka's closet a few years ago, it was full of bright dresses and ladylike, retro accessories. Her must-haves were surprisingly mature for someone so young. “I can't live without my dogs, Cole Haan boots, Mason Pearson hairbrush, headbands, and computer!” she said in the interview. Um, me neither.
In the years since that interview, Shipka's style has gotten a little more mature, but she still brings a fresh youthfulness to every red carpet and event she attends. One of the best things about her style is the way she mixes silhouettes, colors, textures and patterns in a way that just works. Her Paris Fashion Week Look is just one example of it.
The lacy bodice and necktie manage to be chic without being stuffy. Her dress at Teen Vogue's Young Hollywood Party was just as chic. The bright flowers on her bodice somehow look fresh and modern.
This look, from the Emmys, could have gone wrong so easily. It's a little bit untraditional to wear a dress over pants, but Shipka totally pulled it off. Without the slim black pants, her look would've been overly girly. They add some much-needed chicness.
Shipka can clearly pull off yellow, and she proved that again at this year's BAFTA awards. She definitely knows how to mix and match colors and shapes like a boss.
At an Entertainment Weekly party, Shipka's mod white dress totally channeled the '60s (the decade Mad Men was set in), and she pulls it off. Again, her look easily could have veered into something saccharine, but her sleek hair and simple nude shoes make the giant bow look impossibly chic.
Shipka's clothes tend to be lighter colors (which makes sense for a 15-year-old young lady), but this navy dress at a Harper's Bazaar party was age appropriate. The texture makes it fun, not frumpy.
Again, dark colors and mixing textures works on Shipka, despite her age. Her look at the Rag & Bone NYFW show fits in perfectly with New York fashionistas. The unexpected combo of mesh and velvet is classic for the actress, who loves mixing it up.
Finally, Shipka returned to her roots at the Toronto Film Festival and wore a classic bright color — yellow. Her fit-and-flare dress avoids looking too '60s because of her hair and trusty high-heeled sandals.
I, for one, am obsessed with Shipka's style. Even though I'm known for sticking to neutrals in my own wardrobe, she's inspiring me to be bold about mixing patterns, colors and textures. After all, you're only young once.
