May's Husband Better Watch Out On 'S.H.I.E.L.D.'

by Leah Marilla Thomas

Grant Ward is not winning me back any time soon, what with his dangerous driving and what seemed like human bowling in parking lots. Now he's gone and recruited someone with deep ties to Hydra who could be a danger to Andrew Garner. Who is Werner Von Strucker on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ? This playboy, played by Spencer Treat Clark, is a Marvel comics character whose name should already be familiar to fans of the MCU. Ward was able to win him over with a sneak rat attack and the opportunity to kill people, and now he's headed back to school as an undercover agent in Garner's psychology class. Wonderful.

You'll remember that Werner's father Baron Wolfgang Von Strucker was a Hydra villain in the tag of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, mentioned briefly on S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 2, and appeared at the start of Avengers: Age of Ultron. He's the one who had not only Loki's scepter in his clutches, but "created" Quicksilver and Scarlett Witch. Turns out, he had a brat son this whole time. I wonder if Werner is as interested in people with powers as his old man? If so, he and Garner will have a lot to talk about in class.

In the comics, Werner Von Strucker was a Hydra leader who interacted with two Daredevil characters, the Punisher and Wilson Fisk. It's also interesting to note that in the comics, the Baron had twins in addition to Werner. A lot of fans thought that in Ultron, the Maximoff siblings were taking place of these twins. So... does Werner have powers? Was he experimented on by his father as well? Probably not, because we would have seen them in that fight, but it's interesting to think about.

Honestly, I should have seen this coming. Spencer Treat Clark is "in" with the Whedon family crowd after his role in Much Ado About Nothing . Joss Whedon, as well as his brother and sister in law, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. showrunners Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, are known amongst fans like me for bringing back actors that they've worked with in the past, particularly as villains. I should have known that "Alexander," as Clark's character was originally listed, would be more than just a rich kid on a boat. Werner Von Strucker doesn't seem to care whose life he takes in order to get what he wants, and is a dangerous new addition to Team Bad Guys on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
