Joe Will Have A New Task Force On 'The Flash'

by Leah Marilla Thomas

We're sure to meet more metahumans and more big bad villains when The Flash returns for Season 2, but what about the people on the CW series who aren't necessarily involved in S.T.A.R. labs? What is Joe West going to get up to this season, now that he's lost his partner Eddie? In The Flash Season 2, a "metahuman task force" will pop up in Central City. Executive Producer Gabrielle Stanton explained what the metahuman task force would entail in an interview with The Collider.

"At the end of last season, with that singularity in the sky, Central City obviously knows there’s stuff going on. So, when we open up the season, The Flash and meta-humans, and the idea that there’s other stuff out there, is going to be a lot more in the zeitgeist. Joe is going to be working on the meta-human task force at the police station, so when a call comes in, if it’s a bank robber with wings and horns and he’s shooting fire, then they’ll probably send Joe."

This isn't just going to involve Iris' father, naturally. I'm curious as to who else will be on this team, and whether or not they'll all have the same philosophy. According to the official CW press release for the second episode this season, "Joe must deal with a determined officer named Patty Spivot who wants to join his meta-human task force." We'll meet both Patty, who is played by actress Shantel VanSanten, and the metahuman task force in the Season 2 premiere as well.

The CW says that in Tuesday's episode, Cisco will be helping Joe with the task force. Is he building him new tech? Helping to vet applicants? Either way, I'm excited. It's always fun when Cisco and Joe team up together. Plus, Cisco could use a new father figure after Harrison Wells/Eobard Thawne betrayed him and then became unborn.

Here's my question, is Joe going to become a sort of villain this season? I'm glad that Central City is now wise to the world of metahumans, but could this metahuman task force turn into something evil? Joe cares about Barry Allen so much, but I've seen this story over and over with superheroes, particulary with . They're meant to be vigilantes, and organized law enforcement can sometimes get in the way. Are the cops going to start forming opinions about all people with power, and going after harmless metahumans as well? We need to have a metahuman movement of some kind eventually, right?

On the other hand, this task force could bring a more enlightened understanding to "dealing" with metahuman disturbances that aren't necessarily crime. It all depends on who Joe recruits for this job. Whether they're working with S.T.A.R. Labs or against them, it'll be an interesting dynamic to add to The Flash in Season 2.
