When it was announced that Miley Cyrus was hosting the season premiere of Saturday Night Live , I think it's safe to say that we all expected fireworks from the first moment she stepped onto the stage. However, Cyrus' opening SNL monologue went way easy on us: She basically just sang an in memoriam for all the things we probably won't miss this summer. That's right. Despite her get-up that was comprised of a sparkly field of daisies (with a bedazzled swimming cap to match), the opening was pretty, well, tame for the woman who wore glorified strips of duct tape and threw verbal spars at Nicki Minaj during her recent VMAs hosting gig, among other outrageous moments.
Instead, she took her first few SNL minutes to take down the easiest targets of the summer: Pizza Rat, "the dentist who killed Cecile the Lion," the Entourage Movie, Kim Davis, Meek Mill (for feuding with Drake), Ariana Grande's licked donut, and Lenny Kravitz's penis for making that one unexpected appearance earlier this summer. I suppose the joke was that her "things we'll miss about summer" song was full of people we definitely won't miss, but the funniest moment was when Bobby Moynihan played both Jared Fogel and Josh Duggar by simply removing his glasses and spinning around.
Of course, after that tame opening, Cyrus went onto rap in a Grease-themed sketch and pull some expected Cyrus antics. But still, it was a little strange that she went so easy on us during the opening sketch. You'd think, after everything this woman has done in the past, she would have gone a little tougher on us, but it seems, for now, that she's saving the big guns for the post-midnight programming.
