Tinashe Could Be Pop Music's Next Big Star
Listen up: On Friday, up-and-coming singer Tinashe premiered her new single, "Player," and it proves she has what it takes to become pop music's next big thing. If she's not on your radar yet, it's time to get with the program. Here's a quick introduction to the 22-year-old artist: Tinashe burst onto the scene in January 2014 with her infectious DJ Mustard–produced single, "2 On," which climbed all the way to No. 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Nine months later, she released her critically acclaimed debut LP, Aquarius , an eclectic mix of alternative R&B and modern pop (standout tracks include "All Hands On Deck," "Feels Like Vegas," and "Pretend"). The newcomer supported Nicki Minaj on tour this summer, and is currently opening for Katy Perry. (Pretty impressive, right?) I think that just about covers it! Tinashe's new album, Joyride , is due out in November, and if "Player" is any indication, you don't want to miss it.
"Player" effortlessly blends Tinashe's trademark style of alt. R&B with cutting edge dance-pop to create something totally unique (and totally irresistible). It's all a part of her plan to expand her appeal. "I don't see myself as an urban niche act," Tinashe told Billboard at the end of August. "I want to have mainstream success that doesn't feel forced or label-made." If you ask me, she's on the right track. Check out the sexy and addictive "Player" below.
It's always tough for new artists to "break through," but Tinashe has already had a taste of chart success with "2 On" (and she's rubbin' elbows with superstars like Minaj and Perry these days), so she definitely has an advantage. If "Player" gets the promotional push it deserves from Tinashe's record label, RCA, I think it could be huge. It's without a doubt one of my favorite singles released so far in 2015. I can't take it off repeat!
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Tinashe is an extremely exciting and extremely talented newcomer to watch. Here's to hoping her fame continues to grow in the coming months.
"Player" is available on iTunes and Spotify now.
