Your Facebook profile is about to get a major facelift, now that Facebook is letting users upload videos as profile pictures. They announced the update today in a string of updates to user's profiles, which include easier visibility, pinned photos, more mobile-friendly navigating, temporary profile pictures, and — the pièce de resistance — the ability to upload a seven second video of yourself where your static profile pic used to be. Let the GIF games begin, my friends.
“Earlier this half [year] we were having a brainstorm, and sometimes you find a gem," Facebook's project manager Aigerim Shorman shared with Tech Crunch. "One of my designers called me over [to look at an engineer’s] Facebook At Work account. But his profile pic was moving. I thought ‘this is going to be a great expression opportunity’. It brought the profile to life. You got to know the person better. So we got inspired to create an option to create a profile video.”
Can we take one second here to acknowledge that Facebook basically just turned itself into a Wizarding scrapbook? This brings a tear to my Muggle eye. I will finally fulfill my destiny of scarring friends, acquaintances, and that one guy I met in line for the roller coaster at Six Flags in 2007 by posting a GIF of myself dancing the worm.
Here's a bit of insight into how the new feature will work:
No word yet on when exactly the new features are going to launch, but if you need any profile video inspo in the meantime, feel free to reenact this GIF of Liz Lemon in your own living room:
