If you thought the Inhuman Lash was the craziest-looking thing you were gonna see on the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 3 premiere, boy were you wrong. A reveal at the end of the episode was far more disturbing. After several excellent, emotional scenes with Fitz, we finally learned that Simmons is alive on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and even saw where she went when that monolith swallowed her up. Well, we sort of know where she is. Simmons' brief scene created way more questions than it answered.
Can I just start by pointing out how great Fitz was in this episode? Not only did his frustration and grief at losing Simmons make me weepy, but I thoroughly enjoyed the continuation of his journey to becoming a full-fledged S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. Fitz was off playing Indiana Jones in Morocco — finding clues, tricking bad guys, and making quick escapes. The clue that he found was a Hebrew word that meant death. Is that a red herring?
Because from what we saw, Simmons isn't dead. That is a relief. She is, however, in some kind of danger. We met up with her in the middle of what looked like a chase scene. However, we never saw what she was running from as she darted behind a rock to hide. In the distance, we saw several unfamiliar planets and moons on the horizons. So, Simmons is in space, but where in space where is she? What's chasing her, and what kind of adventures is she going to have on this planet? This reminds me a bit of the Pylea arc on Angel. Is she more likely to run into Lady Sif or Star-Lord in her travels? There are plenty of options in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Logically, I would guess that she's on the Kree planet, and that the monolith is some kind of alien version of the vanishing cabinet from Harry Potter.
Based on the official ABC press release and promo for next week's episode titled "Purpose in the Machine," Fitz is going to enlist the help of an Asgardian that we met in Season 1. While I doubt Jemma is on Asgard, it'll be fun to duck back into that world again on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and hopefully the team will be able to bring Simmons back soon.
