Why Was Leo Heckled?

by Tanya Ghahremani

Look, it's perfectly fine to hate a movie from a respected director. Martin Scorsese is a talented, amazing filmmaker, we all know this — if a few people don't like The Wolf of Wall Street, that's fine. Go watch Goodfellas again, have a glass of wine, calm yourself down. Definitely don't do this: According to the Huffington Post, an unnamed screenwriter heckled Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio after a Wolf of Wall Street screening for Academy Award voters, because they just hated the movie that much. Please don't do that.

It was actress Hope Holiday, who was present at the screening, who recanted exactly what happened: In a post on her Facebook, Holiday wrote that a screenwriter ran over to DiCaprio and Scorsese after the screening ended, screaming "shame on you!" because they felt the movie was "disgusting" — then a fight almost ensued. The post, in full:

last night was torture at the Academy--"The Wolf Of Wall Street"---three hours of torture--same disgusting crap over and over again---after the film they had a discussion which a lot of us did not stay for--the elevator doors opened and Leonardo D. Martin S. and a few others got out then a screen writer ran over to them and started screaming--shame on you --disgusting--

In a comment after, Holiday also added:

Talented men putting such junk on the screen and thinking it was funny--a fight almost ensued --I ran down the stairs

According to a rep for Paramount, Scorsese wasn't "directly" verbally attacked — but did confirm that someone made a negative comment towards him. Either way, this is isn't looking too good for DiCaprio's Oscar chances... The Wolf of Wall Street may very well be too edgy for Academy voters. Ah, well — fiftieth time's the charm?
