Unless you have been living under a rock, you’ve probably already heard the news that Viola Davis made serious history on Sunday night when Davis won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Her win, for her amazing performance as Annalise Keating on How to Get Away with Murder, was not only totally deserved, it was a very long time coming. Because with her win, Davis became the first black woman to win an Emmy for Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Seriously. The first! How has it taken this long?
But, as big as the moment was for Viola, it was an even bigger moment for women of color. Davis' inspiring speech not only inspired viewers, but it also sparked an emotional outpouring from celebrities everywhere. I mean, stars came out of the woodwork to offer congratulations, support, and gratitude for both Davis’ amazing career and accomplishments and the inspiring words she said in her acceptance speech.
