What Your Favorite HP Quote Says About You

by K.W. Colyard

I've written before about just how quotable Harry Potter is. Words from the thousands of pages J.K. Rowling gave us still resonate in our hearts as personal mantras, and the books and films gave us plenty of snarky comebacks and sass to use for years to come. We might all know the major quotes from the series, but each of us has her personal favorite.

Oh, you know the one. It tugs at something deep in your chest whenever you read it, and you have to hold back your tears whenever you hear someone say it. This quote might have meaning to everyone, but it occupies a very special place in your heart.

I think you can tell a lot about a person by what her favorite Harry Potter quote is. No, this isn't going to turn into some basic vs. hipster vs. free-spirit debate. If you have the same favorite quote as millions of other people, that's OK, because you all like that quote for your own, personal reasons.

I've got 10 of the most famous Harry Potter quotes here, so just scroll down to find out what your favorite line says about you. Can't find your favorite quote here? Disagree entirely, or think my assessment is spot-on? Be sure to let me know what you think by sharing your results on Twitter!

"Harry — yer a wizard."

—Rubeus Hagrid, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

This line still gives you the tremblies because you remember feeling sh*t get real when you first read it. You like beginnings, and, in a lot of ways, this quote from Hagrid is where Harry Potter starts. You're the type of person who loves the newness of things, and you're always seeking out new experiences to get your fix.

"I hope you're pleased with yourselves. We could all have been killed — or worse, expelled."

—Hermione Granger, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Hermione always had the best priorities, didn't she? If this is your favorite quote, you're the type of person who loves efficiency, planning, and progress. You've got goals to meet, and you aren't going to let silly boys and nasty trolls get in your way.

"Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light."

—Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

You're an optimist, but not the annoying, everything-is-always-wonderful kind. You don't expect people to be happy all the time. When your friends and loved ones are sad, however, you kindly point out the positives in their situations and try to help them find their way out of the funk.

"Don't worry. You're just as sane as I am"

—Luna Lovegood, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

What is normal, anyway? Overrated, that's what. You know that normal is relative, and that everyone is weird in her own way. When your friends and loved ones question their sanity in times of stress, you're there to remind them that they're in good company.

"Have a biscuit, Potter."

—Minerva McGonagall, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

You're the practical person in your group of friends. Your dry wit and blunt manner might alienate some, but you can almost always keep a level head, and that makes many people keen to come to you for advice.

"I solemnly swear that I am up to no good."

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Oh, you. You're a trouble-maker. Maybe you were a party girl in high school and college, or maybe you just like to stir up the tiniest bit of drama when you can. Either way, you're a really fun person who knows exactly how to manage her mischief.

"Kill the spare."

—Lord Voldemort, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Not many people would have a Voldemort quote as their favorite, but you don't care. You like a minimalist aesthetic, and you don't have time for clutter. You don't have affairs, unpaired socks, or extra pens. Or you just hate Twilight. Either way, really.

"It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live."

—Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

You are definitely a Type-B personality. You have a general idea of what you want in life, maybe even a few big dreams, but you don't let the future rule your present. Instead of worrying about what might happen, you live in the moment and relish the small things that make life interesting.

"Always."

— Severus Snape, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

"Always" is the line for hopeless romantics. You're the type of person who mourns Snape and Lily's romance-that-wasn't, and you have a soft spot in your heart for the loves that haunt you deeply, whether they're people, pets, or fandoms.

"Not my daughter, you bitch!"

—Molly Weasley, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Everyone loves when Molly Weasley went all Mama Bear on Bellatrix Lestrange, but this quote has special significance to some people. If you're a parent or the child of a strong mother, this is the moment you remember most.
