Would you call me crazy if I declared Freak Show the most chic of 2014-15? I haven't caught Fashion Week fever, promise. The Creative Arts Emmy Awards that American Horror Story: Freak Show won on Saturday basically confirmed it. The series picked up trophies for Outstanding Costumes For A Period/Fantasy Series, Limited Series Or Movie, Outstanding Hairstyling For A Period/Fantasy Series, Limited Series Or Movie, Outstanding Prosthetic Make-Up For A Series, Limited Series, Movie Or A Special, and Outstanding Makeup For A Limited Series Or Movie (Non-Prosthetic). Basically, prosthetic or not, AHS is on top!
UPDATE: The show actually received five awards total, though their last is not specially style-related; their final award is for Outstanding Special Visual Effects In A Supporting Role. This also means that American Horror Story: Freak Show has the second highest number of Emmys at the moment — yay! They're right behind Game of Thrones, who took home eight awards total.
I know these awards have long titles, but the new rule defining a limited series is actually helping us out. AHS isn't serialized, so it isn't really fair for it's stories and characters to compete against, say, seven years of Don Draper. Plus, it means that American Horror Story also doesn't have to compete against the other most popular genre show on television today, Game of Thrones, for about half of those categories.
American Horror Story is a campy anthology series, and these awards prove that it's the best of the best. The talent behind the scenes of this show is incredible, and that's what makes the Creative Arts Emmys so important. These are the people who get the least amount of praise, thanks, and recognition for what they do and without them we wouldn't have had the beautiful and twisted world of Freak Show.
Plus, can you imagine what this means for next year? If the American Horror Story crew took home this many awards for Freak Show, think what that means for Hotel next year with Lady Gaga. If you thought they were stylin' before, just you wait.
