'Narcos' Should Get Another Season

by Leah Marilla Thomas

Have you finished Narcos, the new Netflix series detailing Pablo Escobar and the Colombian drug cartel? With only 10 episodes, the crime drama is pretty easy to binge. Will there be a Narcos Season 2? I don't love using the word "hooked" or "addictive" for pun reasons, but a lot of fans have got to be wondering about the show's future after running through Season 1. It has a fun format, an amazing cast, and covers a fascinating era of history that you may not be that familiar with, depending on where you grew up and your curriculum situation. [UPDATE: According to Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has announced Narcos will be renewed for Season 2.]

There has been no official word from Netflix yet. However, I wouldn't be worried for the fate of the show already. Netflix is not a traditional network, and they don't have to play by the "rules" of television. Sometimes, as was the case with The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, a series is ordered for two seasons right off the bat. New seasons of House of Cards and Orange is the New Black have been ordered before and during the current seasons.

Meanwhile, Daredevil was renewed for Season 2 about a month after it premiered. The same thing happened with Marco Polo's Season 2 renewal as well as the sitcom Grace and Frankie . Netflix isn't consistent, which in this case is a good thing. They're also pretty game to give their original series a chance. Most of their original properties have gotten at least two seasons, and every one that hasn't yet is a series that either hasn't started or, like Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp, just premiered this summer like Narcos.

So it's likely that this series will be picked up for more episodes in the next couple of weeks. It's getting mixed reviews from critics but plenty of early fan enthusiasm. Plus, looking at the true events that inspired the series, while I don't want to spoil anything, but there's definitely story potential for Narcos beyond Season 1. The conflict went on for years. Let's hope the series gets a renewal announcement soon!
