Miley Cyrus' New Album Needs To Come To iTunes

by Kadeen Griffiths

While we were all hanging out in our homes, minding our business, watching the 2015 MTV VMAs, Miley Cyrus had a special surprise for us. No, it wasn't her wild costumes, her hilarious Instagram sketch, or how many times she could stick her tongue out and wiggle it. Instead, Miley Cyrus released a surprise album called Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz that is now available to stream for free on her website. Yes, that's right! An entire album, entirely free. It should come as no surprise that so many people flocked to Cyrus' website to check this new album out that the page actually went down for a little while. But, now that we've all had time to digest the bizarre songs and even more bizarre track titles, when will Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz be on iTunes?

There can be no doubt that the album will make its way to iTunes eventually. I mean, even if Cyrus continues to offer the album for free forever, it can still make its iTunes debut. However, the fact that she chose to release it on her website via Soundcloud first before shifting it over to iTunes is an interesting choice that makes it difficult to judge exactly when that debut will be. According to a Billboard "source," the streamable release might be all we're getting from this album for at least a week or two. "It’s not a Miley record," the anonymous source said. "It’s a project she’s been working on with the Flaming Lips. It’s amazing, it’s incredible, it just needs to be understood that it’s not a typical, straightforward Miley record — we don’t want there to be confusion in the marketplace."

So does the fact that this isn't a straightforward Cyrus record mean that we won't ever be able to download these songs? That's doubtful. It's more likely that Cyrus will have the album free to stream on her website for a week, giving her fans enough time to listen to its in its entirety and find their favorite singles, and then release the album on iTunes by next Sunday — by which point everyone will be scrambling to actually own if not the whole album then at least the songs whose lyrics they have memorized during the wait. Currently, Cyrus hasn't breathed a word of any plans to make a more official release of the album than this one, but then she hasn't breathed a word about the album at all except to declare that it is out and where you can find it.

Until that magnificent iTunes debut happens, I guess we'll just have to keep replaying that Soundcloud playlist again and again until our psychedelic dreams are set to the soundtrack of Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz. I'm sure that's exactly what Cyrus was going for.
