8 Times Kanye Earned The Video Vanguard Award
Oh, Kanye. Kanye, Kanye, Kanye. While I'm sure we can all have a very lengthy (possibly heated) discussion over the star's public persona and frequent outbursts, there is certainly one thing about the man himself that cannot be disputed: He makes great music. Which, is why West is receiving the Video Vanguard Award at the 2015 VMAs on Sunday. You know, whether you like it or not. Barring reprehensible actions, I typically like to keep my music and the personal lives of the people who make said music separate. It's just more enjoyable that way, so I advise you to do the same.
I've heard some grumbling from people that West shouldn't have gotten this award for one reason or the other, and I cannot help but disagree. Wikipedia says, "The Video Vanguard Award, also known as the Lifetime Achievement Award, is given to musicians who have made a profound effect on the MTV culture, honoring an artist's body of work." With that in mind, let's acknowledge a few things about West. Yes, he's young. Yes, he's done some not-so-cool things to other musicians who were receiving their own special awards. But, none of those points actually negate his talent or his penchant for delivering amazing tunes and music videos to accompany them. And really, I'm not sure any of us can sit there and say we haven't jammed the hell out to one of his hits or tried to emulate some of his iconic music video moves. The dude knows what it takes to lead the musical way, regardless of his antics.
The rapper's Video Vanguard Award honor is actually completely justified, and here is why:
1. "Jesus Walks"
Watching the making of this music video may have been the defining moment of my middle school career. Because lets be honest, not too many good things happen during that horrific, awkward, pubescent time. But this was definitely one of the rarities.
2. "Gold Digger"
Unforgettable. The Glee kids sure as heck thought so, anyway:
See?
3. "Stronger"
The sunglasses, man. The sunglasses.
4. "Only One"
Was there a single person unaffected by this video? I think not.
5. "Through The Wire"
It's brutal to watch his pain but it's honest and so, so badass.
6. "Bound 2"
If you don't think this video made a cultural impact, see below:
For better or worse.
7. "All Of The Lights"
*Sets off fireworks* This is a music video, friends.
8. "Heartless"
Cartoon Kanye, undeniably adorable (although, that may not have been the desired affect). Either way, you can't deny how absolutely awesome this particular video is.
So, naysayers, Imma let you finish, but West is getting this award whether you like it or not, and he totally deserves the prize.
