How Many Of These VMA Outfits Do You Remember?
The world is just a couple of days away from witnessing some of the most outrageous red carpet looks of the year, because when it comes to mind-blowing fashion, the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards will surely deliver the craziest of the cray. Let’s not forget, this is the awards show that brought us Britney and Justin in matching denim, Lady Gaga’s meat dress, and Lil Kim in her pasties. But before finding out on Sunday night who will top those epic VMAs red carpet moments, let’s revisit some outfits that you’ve probably forgotten about, but definitely need to see again… and they are amazing.
Ever since it’s very first telecast back in 1984, the MTV Video Music Awards have celebrated the individuality and creativity of recording artists. From Madonna’s iconic wedding gown, to Beyoncé’s pregnancy announcement tuxedo, to 2015 VMAs host Miley Cyrus twerking in her teddy bear getup, the show’s history is full of headline-making outfits. Yet even these three pop divas had less-than-memorable fashion moments through the years, much like the flashback styles of the Teen Choice Awards. Joining Madge, Bey, and Miley are fellow celebrities and their outfits that are bold, unique, and totally outrageous – just like the VMAs themselves.
Miley Cyrus, 2012
Bustle's Meg Zulch wrote about Miley's first VMAs appearance, but this outfit gets honorable mention for its gothic glam.
Rihanna, 2006
Meanwhile, here's Rih at her first VMAs already giving some #BBHMM sass.
Beyoncé and Jay-Z, 2004
What happened, you guys?
Taylor Swift, 2008
Confused Tay is confused.
Avril Lavigne and Kelly Osbourne, 2003
Tell us how you really feel about the VMAs! Well, at least one of them (Kelly) outgrew this angsty phase and embraced her inner fashionista.
Hayley Williams, 2009
The Paramore singer looked adorbs in a record skirt created by this year's VMAs Moonman designer Jeremy Scott.
Jennifer Lopez, 2002
She's still "Jenny from the Block" in this photo, but nowadays she's known as Jenny from Balmain.
Demi Lovato, 2011
Demi matched the Moonman trophy in this metallic ensemble, but here's hoping that she'll turn up the volume even more during her VMAs performance this year.
Katy Perry, 2012
Even the Prism singer wasn't feeling this outfit. Katy definitely made up for it last year by recreating Britney and Justin's iconic denim look.
Madonna, 1998
Sometime between her 1984 "Like A Virgin" performance and that kiss with Britney Spears, the queen of reinvention went futuristic-meets-Kabbalah at the VMAs.
