7 Backstreet Boys Lyrics You Def Misunderstood

by Rachel Semigran

When the Backstreet Boys first asked me, "Am I orignal? Am I the only one? Am I sex-u-al? Am I everything you need?" in 1997, my answer was a resounding YES. Ever since their chiseled bodies, covered in silk and rain, made their way onto my TV screen and my heart, I have been a die hard Backstreet Boys fan. And, as I get older, I start to realize that there were a lot of misunderstood Backstreet Boys lyrics that went right over my head when I was younger.

Look, I'm 28 years old, and there are few things on this Earth that bring me to my happy place as swiftly has the earnest harmonies of BSB, so just let me have this, mmmkay? Being the unabashed grown up fan that I am, I have come to understand a little bit more about BSB's music over the years — like the fact that "I don't want you to cry no more inside," is a grammatically incorrect phrase. But I've also noticed how many of the lyrics I completely misunderstood as a tween, because I was probably too overwhelmed with screaming and debating with my friends over which member was the best one (it's Brian, by the way. AJ is a close second).

Here are the lyrics I definitely didn't get the first time around.

"Doesn't Really Matter If You're On The Run/It Seems Like We're Meant To Be"

I'm slightly embarrassed about this one, but I was 11 when this song came out... I thought "on the run" meant the girl they were singing about was a criminal, and not just a busy person.

"Could You Do Me Right? Will You Come Out To Play? 'Cuz That's The Way I Like It"

Oh... sex stuff! And here I was thinking they meant Tag or something.

"If You Really Like It Hot, Find Someone Who Hits The Spot, Honey"

OMG, now I know what spot they mean. I'm pretty sure I interpreted this as something about hot sauce. Tacos really hit the spot, amirite?

"But Let Me Tell You Now, There Are Prices To Fame, All Right"

At the time, it probably didn't sink in that this could be about some of the band member's substance abuse problems and stints in rehab.

"Wishin' I Could Thank You In A Different Way, C'mon"

More sex stuff.

"Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely/Is This The Feeling I Need To Walk With?"

See, I always thought this song was a "Stay with me" kinda love song, but the more I listen to it, the more it sounds like a break up.

"I Want It That Way"

I don't think they even know what "that way" means. It will forever be a mystery, ne'er to be unraveled.

Well BSB fans, I hope this has cleared some confusion up for you. At least we can all agree on one thing: no matter what the lyrics really mean, the Backstreet Boys are still Larger Than Life.
