The MTV VMAs Just Got Even Better
If there's one performer who consistently delivers knockout performances, it's Nicki Minaj. And, as they should, it seems that MTV totally agrees with that statement — because the network announced Thursday that they're giving the "Night Is Still Young" singer a big role in the 2015 Video Music Awards. Like, huge. One she totally deserves after her jaw-dropping performance at last year's award show. According to MTV, Nicki Minaj will open the 2015 MTV VMA Awards on Sunday.
Honestly, I'm 100 percent sure this is the best idea that the show has had since making Miley Cyrus the host of the award show. There's simply no way that Minaj won't slay this opening performance.
The best thing that the VMAs audience can hope for this year? That history will repeat itself — at least, in terms of pure epicness of Minaj's performance. In 2014, Minaj performed an absolutely insane rendition of her hit "Anaconda," on the show, and inadvertently set the bar way high for pretty much everyone else that night. The ever-fabulous Minaj reenacted her choreography from her infamous music video, complete with dancers who looked like they walked straight out of a very sexy version of the garden of Eden.
(The only bummer about this year's performance is that we likely won't see a total recreation of this performance — though, I'm totally hoping that we will 10 years down the line at a future VMA throwback show. A GIRL CAN DREAM, RIGHT?!)
Anyway, if you weren't excited for the VMAs yet, this should do it. But, now I'm sure many of us are wondering — what song could Minaj possibly perform this year that will slay the same way "Anaconda" did? I mean, I'm not totally sure it's even possible — but if there's one person who can do it, it's this rap superstar.
Now, all she needs is the perfect performance song. Here are seven tunes that Minaj would kill with at VMAs this year:
1. "The Night Is Still Young"
What better tune to kick off the VMAs with than one that celebrates the beginning of an amazing night?
2. "Hey Mama"
Technically, this isn't Minaj's own track — it's David Guetta's, and it also features Afrojack and Bebe Rexha — but I'm totally listening to it for Minaj's vocals. Could the VMAs open with a sick collaboration between all of these artists?
3. "Pound The Alarm"
This song just screams dance break, which is what any VMA opener should do. If there's any song to get people on their feet, it's this track. Plus, the video leaves plenty of costume inspiration.
4. "Feeling Myself"
Sure, this song wouldn't be the same without Beyoncé, but it's still the confidence-anthem of the year. Also, if Minaj did want to bring Bey on stage, I wouldn't hate that...
5. "Super Bass"
Yep, this song is four years old now — and if I could, I would have made it my song of every summer since. It's a super fun track and definitely a throwback people would appreciate.
6. "Starships"
Speaking of throwbacks, I'd be equally as happy with this beachy Minaj track. Any chance at a medley between these two older faves?
7. "Va Va Voom"
"If you're looking for the main attraction, just hold on tight and let me do my dance." Might as well be Minaj's motto.
Whatever she performs, Minaj's performance is sure to be on to remember. Get hyped.
