'Godzilla' Looks Amazing

by Tanya Ghahremani

I'll admit, I was one of the few who was completely and totally skeptical when I heard that another Godzilla film was in the works. Sure, the cast, with Bryan Cranston, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, and Juliette Binoche sounds awesome, but it just sort of felt like the world needed another Godzilla film as much as it needed a reboot of the Harry Potter franchise — which is, to say, not at all. But one look at the first trailer for Godzilla , and I have to say, my mind is officially changed: This looks good. In fact, better that good, it looks downright beautiful.

Running at nearly two and a half minutes long, the trailer gives us a great look at what to expect from the film plot-wise and aesthetically. Of course, the story is the same: A gigantic monster terrorizes the world, and causes mayhem and destruction of all sorts. It's something the 1988 version of the film from Roland Emmerich did well, but where it manages to stand apart is the cinematography — this reboot, directed by Gareth Edwards, is a completely breathtaking look at a city wracked by chaos, and though we don't get a great look at Godzilla itself, the few glimpses we do get look amazing.

Plus, the score in the trailer is indeed "Requiem" from 2001: A Space Odyssey — a haunting and perfect choice.

You can check out the trailer below. Godzilla is set to hit theaters on May 16, 2014.
