Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Who else is excited about the impending Beetlejuice reboot? The diehard fans of '90s "It" Girl Winona Ryder, that's who! The spirit of her character in the film has remained alive and well, as Winona Ryder has channeled Lydia Deetz, her Beetlejuice alter ego, in real life many times through the years. You never truly let go of your all-black clad inner goth girl.
The actress is, in fact, proof that life can imitate art, albeit intentionally or otherwise.
With her porcelain skin, her inky black hair, her uniquely spiked bangs, and her penchant for wearing all-black, Lydia Deetz isn't actually that much different than some of of Ryder's definitive characters from her heyday.
That's not to say that Ryder played to an exact type, since Lydia Deetz isn't really a replica of, say, Veronica Sawyer, Ryder's dangerously delightful character in Heathers. Nor is she super similar to Lalaina, Ryder's post-college slacker in Reality Bites.
But there was always a dark side to the adorable and oft-conflicted leading ladies inhabited by the actress.
I will be happy to see the actress, who has been much less prolific in recent years after having utterly dominated the '80s and the early part of the '90s, step back into Deetz's pointy black shoes for the reboot.
I am also distinctly reminded of those fun times that Ryder channeled Deetz's fashion sense IRL.
Granted, Lydia Deetz was the quintessential teenage goth girl, always cloaked in head-to-toe black. So when Ryder channeled her IRL, it was evident with an age-appropriate spin.
Let's look back at the nine times when Lydia Deetz's style crept into Ryder's own.
1. Pointy Bangs
Not everyone could pull off Lydia's seriously choppy bangs. Still, I saw the slightest hint of Lydia in Ryder's sideswept and pointy fringe.
2. Monochromatic Ensembles
Black is LD's favorite color. It also looks good on WR, who is a repeat wearer of the shade. That porcelain skin, though.
3. Following Suit
All that's missing is a big-brimmed black hat for this outfit to further summon the Lydia Deetz essence.
4. A Spooky LBD
Would this be Lydia's wedding dress? It needs more black accessories, but it could be, especially if I were writing some fan fiction.
5. Another Spooky LBD
This LBD could serve a similar purpose. Since Ryder paired it with black shoes and tights, it was so witchy x gothy x Lydia good.
6. Chokers
If this choker were a little thicker, it'd totally be borrowed from Lydia's wardrobe.
7. Bangs, Take Two
The bangs have a shape that calls to mind a modern Lydia. See how much fun this is?
8. Oversized Hat
I always think of Lydia with a hat... so I thought of her here, even with the little peek-a-boo of white.
9. Those Doe Eyes
Winona has doe eyes. Lydia has does eyes. Do the math.
Winona Ryder's personal style helped keep Lydia Deetz's essence alive in between Beetlejuice movies.
I can't wait to see how Miss Deetz's mostly monochromatic style has evolved for Beetlejuice 2.
