A Good Birthday Needs A Good Sountrack

by Orli Matlow

Personally, I don't think that we should need to a have a "reason" to throw parties for ourselves, or to post PicStitches of our friends, and say nice things on their Facebook timelines. But, society says that modesty is a virtue, which is why birthdays are so important. It is exciting to use the anniversary if your birth as an opportunity to bring friends together, and to exercise control over the most important elements of what makes a party. The birthday girl is entitled to choosing the time, and the location, and, in the event that it is a house or apartment party, the birthday girl gets to choose what songs for a birthday playlist her guests will have to listen to.

Almost as important as the party itself is the process of getting ready, because it truly sets the tone of the night to come. Are you rushing out, having just grabbed a couple random pieces and calling that your outfit? Then you will likely feel stressed for the duration of the party. To get ready, you need a pump-up playlist, and, for your birthday party, make it special.

Here are the tunes you should jam to at your birthday party, or listen to to get you in the mood.

"Good Life" — Kanye West ft. T-Pain

It's your day! Now, repeat after me (well, after Kanye): "I, I go for mine, I got to shine. Now throw your hands up in the sky."

"It's My Party" — Leslie Gore

While ideally you won't be in a position where you want to cry, this song reminds you that it's your day. Plus, it's fun to dance to and allows you to party in a throwback way.

"Birthday" — The Beatles

A classic — there's a reason why this is the birthday jam they play at sports stadiums while showing birthdays on the Jumbotron. It'll get you rocking out.

"Edge of Glory" — Lady Gaga

It is your day! You're on the edge of glory: you made it another year, and this is going to be the best one yet.

"Party Rock Anthem" — LMFAO

It wouldn't be a party playlist if there wasn't at least one LMFAO song. Depending on what kind of party you're going for, you can also do "sexy and I know it."

"Firework" — Katy Perry

You're gonna own the night like the Fourth of July. Except it's your birthday, not America's. Unless you were born on the Fourth of July.

"Don't Stop" — Fleetwood Mac

I've got to throw in more classic rock in here. This song, regardless of the circumstance, always gives me hope for the year to come: "Don't stop, thinking about tomorrow, don't stop, it'll soon be here. It'll be, better than before. Yesterday's gone, yesterday's gone."

"Birthday Sex" — Jeremih

One can only hope.

Happy birthday, girl! Now party like you're not actually getting any older!
