Is An 'Empire' Spinoff Happening?
Amazing news, Empire fans: According to creator Lee Daniels himself, an Empire spin-off series might be happening, and if it moves forward, it'll most certainly be centered around the best character on the entire series: Cookie Lyon. That’s right: The Cookie that we all know and love might be on our television sets two times a week soon, because there really is no such thing as too much Cookie Lyon.
The spinoff plans, though not officially announced by FOX, were confirmed at the Television Critics Association summer press tour by Daniels himself. As he stated, according to TVLine: “There is going to be a spinoff from Empire, without question. There’s so much ripe story that we’ve talked about already — about Cookie’s family, what makes her her. That in itself is fascinating to me.”
Me too, Lee Daniels! Me too!
The spinoff, according to TV Line, will most likely look into Cookie’s past and her days in North Philadelphia. Daniels revealed the series would answer questions like how Cookie got to where she is now, how she became the person she is when we first meet her on Empire, and what events in her life led her up to her present day reality. So basically a prequel — like Better Call Saul is to Breaking Bad, but for the music industry! This sounds so amazing, "amazing" is an understatement.
No word yet on whether or not Empire stars Terrence Howard or Taraji P. Henson would be in the possible spinoff, or who would play Cookie in her previous life. I’m just hoping whoever plays her does that character justice, because both Cookie and Henson have left some big shoes for her to fill.
Personally, I can’t wait for this spinoff to possibly come to life. Mainly because I’m greedy for more scenes from the married life of Lucious and Cookie — hopefully the show would include some of that? Or, if not, could they at least drop delicious little hints about how Cookie comes to be the person she is in her future life with Lucious?
No word on when to expect this possible Empire spinoff.
