As much as I try, I cannot get into a regular exercise routine. I know that's like, a gauche thing to say when everyone's super hyped on green juice with mystery fountain-of-youth extracts and SoulCycle, but I can't. I've joined gyms, taken classes, contemplated running around my neighborhood (contemplating counts, right?), but just cannot bring myself to commit. However, that doesn't stop me from admiring workout gear when I shop. Sometimes I try to motivate myself to take on a new activity by imagining all the clothes I'd be able to buy for it. Functional, I know. Not only has actual athletic wear become insanely attractive, but everyday clothes with athletic influence have becoming increasingly prevalent — and increasingly intertwined with street style.
For the first time in maybe ever, our fashion icons are killing it in sneakers and not-so-basic sweats on a regular basis. While these "athleisure" pieces tend to be comfy and functional, they also effortlessly put a fashion-forward spin on aesthetics formerly reserved for actual sportswear. And if you haven't already, now is the perfect time to get on board.
We've partnered with Abercrombie & Fitch to share the sport-to-street staples that will reform the way you dress on a daily basis. Keeping a muted color palette, these pieces will effortlessly slip into your current wardrobe and add a cool, quasi-athletic edge to your look — whether you're going all out or just taking a dip.
1. The Perfect Weightless Parka
Oversized Nylon Parka, $69, Abercrombie & Fitch
An ultra-lightweight layer like this is great for the transition into fall. Bungee details, a drawstring waist, and adjustable hood are balanced by a less traditional oversized fit and deep black that goes with everything.
2. The Architectural 'Sports' Bra
Community Rasa Bra, $15, Aritzia
This might not be the best choice for actual exercise, but clean color blocking and structured straps mean this bra will layer perfectly under an oversized tank -- or as-is when you're pretending to go to the gym but really going to the farmers market.
3. The Hoodie Dress
Pam & Gela Hooded Sweatshirt Dress, $147, Bloomingdales
Getting dressed has never been so easy. Just throw on your favorite sneakers and trusty leather jacket when the temperature drops.
4. The Slouchy Jogger
Slouchy Jogger, $58, Abercrombie & Fitch
You know you're living in a great time when sweatpants can be work-appropriate.
5. The Form Meets Function Tee
Adidas By Stella McCartney Mesh Organic Cotton Tee, $60, Saks Fifth Avenue
Is this for playing real sports? Is this just a very fancy T-shirt? I don't know, but I want it.
6. The Contemporary Bomber
Athletic Fleece Bomber Jacket, $78, Abercrombie & Fitch
Definitely not your little brother's varsity jacket. Contemporary materials and a monochrome palette totally update this classic jacket silhouette.
7. The Jogger Skirt
Community Nysa Skirt, $35, Aritzia
What's better than some sleek, comfy military joggers? An effortlessly cool jogger skirt.
8. The Minimalist Sneaker
Nike Tennis Classic Ultra Sneaker, $100, Bloomingdales
The perfect pair of plain white (or black) sneakers will be your new BFF. Pair them with anything from your favorite boyfriend jeans to that mini hooded sweatshirt dress, and you won't even mind being on your feet all day.
9. The Heathered Crop
Wilfred Free Winberg Tank, $15, Aritzia
Athletic grey is so versatile, and a heathered knit is so much more interesting than a flat tone. This high neck and cropped cut works with anything from those joggers to a high-waisted skirt.
10. The Leather Backpack
Mini Pilot Backpack, $595, Rag & Bone
Backpacks are traditionally sporty because they keep your hands free and hold more than the average purse. This mini leather version does... some of that. Just don't toss it around the locker room.
11. The Elevated Sweatshirt
Tipped Crew Sweatshirt, $26, Abercrombie & Fitch
A classic crewneck sweatshirt will always be essential. This tipped version is a little more sophisticated than your average options and polished enough to wear past the weekend.
12. The Not Really A Tennis Skirt
Tennis Skirt, $27, American Apparel
I guess you could literally play tennis in this skirt, but you'd look just as good heading to lunch with your mini leather backpack and marled knit crop top.
13. The Grown-Up Soccer Slide
Cameo Collective Back And Forth Leather Slide Sandal, $165, Nasty Gal
Just as comfy as your old standbys but way better-looking.
