'6 Years' Isn't Your Average Love Story
Maybe I'm missing the cynical chip in my brain, but I've gotta say: the new trailer for the film 6 Years has made me feel all of the feels. The trailer for Hannah Fidell's romantic drama hit the Internet on Thursday, and trust me: if you're a sucker for a love story, this film might just be your next must-watch. That's because this film, which stars Taissa Farmiga and Ben Rosenfield as young couple Melanie and Dan, isn't your run-of-the-mill love story — 6 Years begins at a surprising place for a romantic tale, and that's exactly what makes it stand out.
Unlike many romantic dramas, this film doesn't start out with a meet-cute or end with some grand declaration of love. Instead, the movie takes place six whole years into the couple's relationship (hence the title) where both Melanie and Dan are completely comfortable with one another. They are so comfortable and so in love with one another that even their closest friends don't really get it — how can they be so sure about one another when they have spent most of their youth together? Their love has survived the past six years, but now they have to ask themselves if it can survive the future.
According to the film's synopsis, it's a change of future plans that could come between this couple. Dan has a potential job at a record company, while Melanie is just trying to focus on getting through college. In that way, the film is a realistic look at problems people have in long-term relationships: sometimes life gets in the way.
We'll need to watch the film to find out, but from the trailer alone I sincerely hope that Melanie and Dan's relationship can survive the problems that life hurls their way. Farmiga and Rosenfield have such a natural chemistry onscreen that it's easy to fall in love with this couple. Like, seriously — it's almost unfortunate that the film needs to have any conflict within their relationship at all in order to, you know, be a film: that's just how darn cute these two are together.
Can Melanie and Dan's long-term love conquer all, or will we all need to bring several boxes of tissues to the box office? I'm almost afraid to find out.
