The 2022 U.S. Open will forever be known as the last time Serena Williams competes before officially retiring. On Aug 29, 2022, Williams played her first match in the tournament and won both the game with bejeweled curls and nails that matched her Nike uniform. Here, more details.

Williams’ hair was done by celebrity hairstylist Nikki Nelms who kept her curls slicked back at the crown and let her natural hair loose at the base of the ponytail.

To match the sparkle of the diamond-encrusted Nike headband and outfit, Nelms placed Swarvoski crystals throughout Williams’ hair.

In an Instagram caption that accompanied a photo of the hairstyle, Nelms wrote that Williams has shined her entire life and career — so it only made sense that her hair shined as well.

Nelms’ go-to product to style Williams’ hair was the Maui Moisture Curl Quench Curl Milk, a leave-in milk to define curls, add volume, and control frizz.

Williams’ nails also sparkled. New York City-based nail artist Marina Iwakoshi placed Swarvoski crystals on top of a bare almond-shaped nail base to let the jewels shine.

Another standout of the night, Williams’ daughter Olympia adorably channeled the tennis champion’s 1999 U.S. Open look (where Williams won her first Grand Slam title) with beaded braids.
