11 Met Gala Makeup Moments That Broke The Internet

Since its inception in 1948, the Met Gala has served up some seriously spectacular looks, from the fashion to the hair and makeup. While you wait for this year’s edition to take place in September, revisit some of the most memorable makeup looks to ever grace the pink carpet.

2016: At first glance, Lily Aldridge’s brows looked bleached, but they were actually painted gold. The supermodel’s daring look perfectly complemented her gilded gown and sleek updo.

2017: Lupita Nyong'o’s technicolor lids — courtesy of makeup maestro Nick Barose — included shades of fuchsia, yellow, purple, and blue. The artful look stood out as one of the dreamiest of the night.

2018: Lily Collins’ look for the "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination" themed affair was dark, gothic, and vampy. In addition to Swarovski crystals adorning her eyes, the Emily in Paris star sported a blood-red teardrop on her cheek for a chilling twist.

2019: Lady Gaga’s traffic-stopping lashes came courtesy of her longtime makeup artist Sarah Tanno and were perfectly in line with the year’s camp theme. The pop singer’s dramatic gold falsies were so heavy, in fact, her eyes had to be taped open. Talk about commitment.

2017: A bold theme requires bold makeup, and Rihanna truly understood the assignment. The undefeated champion of the Met Gala sported a rosy pink sheen, not just on the apples of her cheeks but along her temples and eyelids, too.

2014: Joan Smalls’ indigo lips (a mix of navy eyeliner and pink and magenta lipstick, according to makeup artist Sir John) really popped alongside her healthy glow and casual braid.

2019: Billy Porter famously entered the Met Gala’s pink carpet via six men and a throne, but it was the Pose star’s impressive beauty look that had people talking. Along with an embellished headpiece, Porter’s face was adorned in flashy sequins and gold paint.

2016: Willow Smith’s futuristic look is proof that you can say a lot with very little. In line with the evening’s theme (“Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology”), the singer coolly sported a metallic silver dot under each eye.
