Spending Christmas at Sandringham Estate is a long-held tradition for the royal family, which Harry quickly got used to. Harry is pictured in 1990, joining his grandfather and family for a Christmas Day church service.

In 1997, Philip guided Harry and his brother, William, at just 12 and 15, as they marched behind the coffin of their mother Princess Diana in her much-watched funeral procession.

In 2009, Harry marched alongside Philip to mark Remembrance Sunday. They had a strong common bond in the military, with Philip serving in WWII and Harry serving in Afghanistan, and Philip would often teach his grandson how to properly pay tribute to those who lost their lives in service.

Following royal tradition, Harry continued to support Philip at annual Trooping the Colour ceremonies, as pictured here in 2012. But as the years went by, Harry attended dressed in royal uniform, just like his grandfather.

Harry and Philip’s relationship wasn’t strictly business. They were known to make each other laugh, even during very visible public appearances, as seen here at the final match of the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

Before their departure as working members of the royal family, Harry shared many of his beloved royal traditions with Meghan Markle, pictured here in 2017 going to a Christmas Day service in Sandringham with his grandfather.

In 2018, Philip attended Harry’s wedding to Meghan, which was planned quickly and close to home for his sake, according to Entertainment Tonight. “He’s incredibly close to his grandfather,” royal expert Katie Nicholl said. “Being 96, Harry thought it was it was a great thing to [have] the wedding sooner rather than later, so his grandfather could be there, fit and healthy.”

In one of Harry’s last photos with his grandfather, Philip is pictured meeting his great-grandson Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor in 2019. Archie’s surname is a tribute to Philip, meaning his memory will live on in the Sussex family forever.
