The Crown is known for its production value, along with its incredible costumes. Princess Diana, portrayed by Elizabeth Debicki, had many iconic outfits throughout her lifetime.

Although we do get some dazzling looks from Di, “There’s very little of her in public wearing glamorous dresses,” Amy Roberts, The Crown’s costume designer told Vanity Fair.

Mohamed Fayed invited Diana and her sons to spend the summer on his superyacht, where she struck up a romance with Dodi Fayed.

Perhaps the most iconic look recreated in Season 5 is the Christina Stambolian LBD (aka the Revenge Dress). Di wore it to a Vanity Fair party at the Serpentine Gallery in London the day after Charles admitted to his affair in 1994.

“She was claiming the space. The way she walked out of that car, the luminosity, the strength of her as that car door opened, she was so fast and forward,” Debicki told British Vogue about the moment.
In real life, Di pioneered this now famous look of an oversized crewneck and shorts — and the subsequent Princess Diana season trend.

Diana’s BBC Panorama interview was also recreated in Season 5 with extra attention going to the costume. “She’s very straight—quite businesslike, isn’t she, in that black jacket, gold earrings, white top,” Roberts said.

“And I think we chose occasions—relating to divorce scenes—where she goes back slightly to her power suits. We did a bit of a parody on a gray lawyer’s suit with a sensible bag. When she visits the queen for one of her final meetings, she’s wearing a lilac suit. It’s powerful but not threatening to the queen,” Roberts added.
