On FX’s The Bear, Jeremy Allen White plays Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto — a Michelin-star chef who returns to Chicago to take over his family’s sandwich shop after his brother Mikey takes his own life.

White’s signature look on The Bear is a little bit disheveled — but fans are eating it up.
Others are jokingly avoiding the show for that very reason.

To prepare for the role, White did a crash course at the Institute of Culinary Education in Pasadena, California, and then worked at two Los Angeles restaurants.

White stars opposite Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who plays Carmy’s deceased brother’s best friend Richie, and the two men have an uneasy friendship.

He also has a strained relationship with Sydney (Ayo Edebiri), another established chef who is excited to work with someone of Carmy’s pedigree.

White likened Carmy’s journey to that of acting, telling WhereIsTheBuzz TV that “as a younger actor, everything really seemed life or death and I think for Carmy, that’s the way it is.”

Co-showrunner and writer Joanna Calo told Complex that the show is “a story about doing it together and being there for each other, even if you kind of hate each other while you’re doing it.”

White isn’t new to playing really complex characters: His breakout role as Lip Gallagher on Shameless also forced the actor to tap into a more volatile side of himself.

Near the end of Shameless’s 11-season run, White told Film Inquiry that he’s “drawn to the kind of characters that tend to be a little bit explosive.”

Fans on Twitter noticed similarities between the two characters.

Though White was raised in New York, he’s become something of a Chicago icon between his 11-year run on Shameless and The Bear.

Back in 2012 he told the Chicago Tribune that he gets approached more in the Windy City than he does in Los Angeles where he lives.

During lockdown, he also joined Dave Franco’s directorial debut The Rental alongside Dan Stevens and Alison Brie.

It was White’s first foray into horror and he got the part when Franco cold emailed him, personally asking him to star in his film.

The 31-year-old is off the dating market. He’s been married to fellow actor Addison Timlin since 2020.

The duo met when they were 17, when they both starred in the film Afterschool.

White and Timlin have two children together — Ezer Billie born in October 2018 and Dolores Wild born in December 2020.

Dakota Johnson, who served as a witness to the White’s wedding, is also both children’s godmother. “My favorite thing on planet earth (besides our kids) is saying ‘my husband.’ You are the greatest person I’ve ever met and you make my life seem touched by God,” she wrote on Instagram.

After you binge The Bear, start preparing for White’s next film: a 1920s drama You Can’t Win, which is in post-production.
