Markle’s first dog was Bogart, a lab-shepherd mix. She adopted him in 2012 reportedly at the insistence of Ellen DeGeneres.

When Meghan moved across the pond for Harry, she was reportedly worried that the big move would negatively impact the older dog. She asked a friend in Toronto to take him in.

Guy was also present at their proposal, Harry and Meghan shared in their Netflix doc. Harry set up a picnic in the North Garden of Kensington Palace and had a bottle of champagne ready.

The couple then adopted a lab named Pula in 2018 following their wedding. Pula (which is the basic monetary unit in Botswana) means “rain” in Setswana. Meghan and Harry visited Botswana together early in their relationship.

Markle had requested an older dog when adopting Mia, according to the animal right attorney and Beagle Freedom Project overseer Shannon Keith.

“Mia just ran to them, something she’d never done — she’s pretty subdued, she’s been traumatized — and Meghan immediately just got on the floor with her and was giving her love,” Keith said of their first interaction.

“The Duchess is holding Mia and was like, ‘We’re adopting her,’” Keith said. “She was like ‘No, we don’t want a Christmas puppy … We want ones we can help who are older.’”
