Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are known for their love of charity and desire to make a difference ... along with their love of dogs. Markle had once said that her pups “mean the absolute world” to her.

Markle’s first dog was Bogart, a lab-shepherd mix. She adopted him in 2012 reportedly at the insistence of Ellen DeGeneres.

When Meghan moved across the pond for Harry, she was reportedly worried that the big move would negatively impact the older dog. She asked a friend in Toronto to take him in.

“This is a permanent decision that Meghan made on her own — not an easy one at that,” a spokesperson for Kensington Palace said at the time.

“It takes a toll on an animal to travel so far across Atlantic combined with the hard, long process of getting approval. … It’s in the best interest of the animal’s well-being to stay.”

Now, Meghan and Harry have three dogs: Guy, Pula, and Mamma Mia.

Guy is Markle’s rescue beagle from Kentucky, who happens to have his own children’s book, His Royal Dogness, Guy the Beagle: The Rebarkable True Story of Meghan Markle’s Rescue Dog.

She adopted him in 2015, and the late Queen Elizabeth II (another dog lover) grew attached to the beagle.

Guy was also present at their proposal, Harry and Meghan shared in their Netflix doc. Harry set up a picnic in the North Garden of Kensington Palace and had a bottle of champagne ready.

Meghan had already moved Guy across the pond to live with her and Harry, so he felt pretty sure she’d say yes. “It's not that I knew she'd say yes, but she'd already moved [her dog] Guy over, so I had Guy as a hostage.”

Guy had casts on his legs when he popped the question, and Harry joked that “he couldn't run away” that deep into the relationship.

The couple then adopted a lab named Pula in 2018 following their wedding. Pula (which is the basic monetary unit in Botswana) means “rain” in Setswana. Meghan and Harry visited Botswana together early in their relationship.

Rain is also considered a blessing in Botswana, giving Pula an even more meaningful moniker.

In August 2022, Meghan and Harry adopted Mamma Mia, an older beagle who had recently had eight puppies.

Markle had requested an older dog when adopting Mia, according to the animal right attorney and Beagle Freedom Project overseer Shannon Keith.

“Mia just ran to them, something she’d never done — she’s pretty subdued, she’s been traumatized — and Meghan immediately just got on the floor with her and was giving her love,” Keith said of their first interaction.

“Mia ran right over to [Prince Harry], put her paws on his knees, and looked into his eyes,” Keith continued, adding that Harry asked about Mia’s health, likes, and dislikes.

The Duchess is holding Mia and was like, ‘We’re adopting her,’” Keith said. “She was like ‘No, we don’t want a Christmas puppy … We want ones we can help who are older.’”

In October, Harry spoke about his life with her three dogs and their two children, Archie and Lilibet.

“I’ve got three [dogs] in this house now, so we basically have five children,” he said on a conference call with WellChild Awards recipients.

“Between the three of them, they drudged around chasing the squirrels every day, but they are also emotional support dogs when they’re behaving.”

Markle spoke about their morning routines in an episode of her Archetype podcast. “Always up with Lili, get her downstairs, then a half hour later, Archie’s up,” she said.

“I start doing his lunchbox right before he’s up while I have her, getting her a little nibble. My husband’s helping me get him downstairs.”

“And then it's like feed all three of the dogs, because we just got another dog,” she continued, “And then [we] get Archie out the door to school. It feels like a whirlwind.”
