Prince William and Kate Middleton arrived in Boston on Nov. 30 for their first U.S. trip in eight years. The visit also marks their first overseas trip since the death of Queen Elizabeth II, after which the couple earned their new titles of Prince and Princess of Wales.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are in the U.S. to present awards at the Earthshot Prize ceremony on Dec. 2, which awards prize money to help fund environmental projects in different fields, including climate change.

Before the Earthshot Prize ceremony, William and Kate lined up a series of meetings and events, which included sitting courtside at a Boston Celtics game against Miami Heat on Nov. 30. However, the game went awry when the couple was booed and met with chants of “U.S.A.” after they were shown on the big screen.

The trip came after Prince William’s godmother Lady Susan Hussey resigned from her honorary Royal role after allegation of racism. During a domestic violence awareness event held by Queen Consort Camila, Hussey repeatedly asked activist Ngozi Fulani where she “really” came from, insinuating she was not British. Fulani told BBC Radio 4 that she responded three times that she was British.

The couple was more warmly received by Bostonians the next day, greeting and posing with well-wishers after a visit with anti-violence organization Roca Inc.

In typical Royal fashion, the Prince and Princess didn’t let the mixed reception get to them. Instead, the couple cheered on the Celtics on Instagram. They sat with Massachusetts Governor-Elect Maura Healey, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, and the basketball teams’ owners during the game.

During a break in the game, William and Kate left their seats to meet a 15-year-old climate change activist who was honored as a local “hero” before the game.

During their trip to Boston, the couple will also tour the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library with the late president’s daughter Caroline Kennedy. “Like President Kennedy, Catherine and I firmly believe that we all have it in ourselves to achieve great things and that human beings have the ability to lead, innovate and problem solve,” William said during their first stop at Boston City Hall.

Of course, a U.S. trip wouldn’t be complete without a visit from the president. The Prince and Princess of Wales will meet with Joe Biden during their tour of the Kennedy Library, though it’s not clear what their meeting will entail.
