King Charles and the Queen Consort arrived by car after travelling from Balmoral following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and chose to stop before entering the Palace in order to speak to those gathered outside.

The 12-minute walkabout marks the King’s first such event in his new role. The gathered crowds could be heard cheering “God Save The King”, while others sang the national anthem.

The King went on to hold his first audience with Prime Minister Liz Truss at Buckingham Palace, and prepare for his televised national address at 6 p.m. BST.

The formal proclamation of Charles as King is due to take place on Sept. 10 at St James’s Palace in London, and will be televised for the first time in history.
