I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) follows four teenagers who are stalked by a killer after accidentally hitting and killing a man during a late-night drive to the beach. A major box office success, the film was credited with revitalizing the slasher genre in the ’90s.

Amazon Studios

Amazon Studios is reimagining the film as an eight-part series executive produced by James Wan (The Conjuring) and Neal H. Moritz, who worked on the original, set to premiere on Oct. 15. Ahead of its release, here’s what the original film’s cast looks like nearly 25 years later.

Jennifer Love Hewitt played Julie James, the first teen to receive an anonymous “I know what you did last summer!” note. She appeared in the 1998 sequel, other ’90s cult classics from Can’t Hardly Wait to Fox’s Party of Five, and starred in CBS’ Ghost Whisperer from 2005 to 2010.

Hewitt currently stars on Fox’s 9-1-1, produced by Ryan Murphy. At a 2018 Fox TCA panel, she discussed a reboot of the 1997 horror film: “I’d have to come back as the creepy old lady now... If they asked me, sure, I would love to. I loved those movies. They were really fun.”

Ryan Philippe portrayed Barry Cox, who unfortunately doesn’t make it to the sequel. The ’90s teen heartthrob is also known from Cruel Intentions and Crash, and he was married to Reese Witherspoon from 1999 to 2007. Together they share a daughter, Ava, and a son, Deacon.

Philippe most recently appeared in the 2021 comedy Lady of the Manor. Of Amazon’s reboot of the 1997 slasher, he told OK!: “It's exciting to see how they will be re-imagined... I've heard the cast is really excellent, and we are all in support of it, all of us from the original.”

In the role of Helen Shivers was Sarah Michelle Gellar. Her character also didn’t reach the sequel, but Gellar appeared alongside Philippe again in Cruel Intentions and starred in Scream 2, Scooby-Doo (2002), and The WB/UPN’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer from 1997 to 2003.

Gellar currently voices Teela on Netflix’s Masters of the Universe: Rebellion and will star in Amazon Studios’ upcoming comedy pilot Hot Pink. She’s married to Freddie Prinze Jr., who she met during I Know What You Did Last Summer, and they have two children: Charlotte and Rocky.

Prinze Jr. played Ray Bronson in the 1997 horror film and its sequel. He’s also known from She’s All That and portrayed Fred alongside Gellar in 2002’s Scooby-Doo. Most recently, Prinze appeared in Peacock’s revival of Punky Brewster with Soleil Moon-Frye.

“I don’t know how they’re gonna make it scary,” Prinze told Collider of Amazon’s I Know What You Did revival series. “James Wan, who I love, made those movies not scary anymore because he did Saw and changed the whole game up. Now, my movie is a comedy, but whatever, it’s cool.”

Johnny Galecki took on the role of Max Neurick, the friends’ first killer suspect. He was also in 1989’s National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and portrayed Dr. Leonard Hofstadter on The Big Bang Theory. In 2018, Galecki was the world's second-highest paid male TV actor.

After appearing on the original Roseanne as David Healy, Galecki reprised his role in the ill-fated 2018 reboot as well as The Conners. Most recently, the Emmy-nominated actor starred in 2019’s A Dog’s Journey.
