Alongside Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams at the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards, Beyoncé makes her VMAs debut with Destiny’s Child. The girl group won Best R&B Video for “Say My Name.” They returned to the 2001 VMAs and won the same category with “Survivor.”

After the release of her first solo album, Beyoncé performed “Baby Boy” and “Crazy in Love” during the 2003 VMAs. That year, she won awards for Best Female Video, Best R&B Video, and Best Choreography.

After many relationship rumors, Beyoncé finally made her red carpet debut with future husband Jay-Z at the 2004 VMAs. She even gave the rapper a shout-out during her speech when she won Best Female Video: “What up, Jay?”

In 2007, Kanye West and 50 Cent presented the Most Earth-Shattering Collaboration Award to Beyoncé and Shakira for their “Beautiful Liar” collaboration. Bey accepted the award on behalf of both of them while Shakira was in Canada. She walked the red carpet that year with her sister Solange.

Perhaps the most iconic VMAs moment of all time happened in Beyoncé’s orbit, when Kanye West stormed the stage while Taylor Swift was accepting the award for Best Female Video in 2009. “Imma let you finish,” he said, “but Beyoncé had one of the best music videos of all time [with “Single Ladies”].”

Later at the same 2009 VMAs, Beyoncé won Video of the Year for “Single Ladies” and classily invited Taylor Swift to the stage to finish her acceptance speech. “I’d like for Taylor to come out and have her moment,” she said before handing the microphone to Swift.

In 2011, Beyoncé announced she was pregnant with her first child during a performance of “Love on Top.” Near the end of the song she said, “Tonight, I want you to stand up on your feet — I want you to feel the love that's growing inside me” before opening her suit coat and rubbing her belly with Jay-Z cheering in the audience.

Beyoncé received the the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award in 2014 and celebrated by performing a 16-minute medley of her fifth studio album Beyoncé.

After the performance, Jay-Z and their daughter Blue Ivy presented the Vanguard Award to Beyoncé. She was visibly choked up, even before Blue Ivy offered her congrats: “Good job, Mommy!”

In 2016, Beyoncé surprised us all with the unannounced Lemonade drop. The visual album earned her a career-high 11 nominations at that year’s VMAs. She won eight of them and performed a powerful medley that night after walking the red carpet with Blue Ivy.

After she gave birth to twins in 2017, Bey and her family have skipped the VMAs every year since then. Her single “BREAK MY SOUL” from Renaissance is up for Song of the Summer, but it’s unknown whether she’ll appear or perform at the 2022 Video Music Awards on Aug. 28.
