This July, catering to all kinds of spooky tastes, Netflix released original horror movies spanning different subgenres from various countries. From a cult horror Italian film to a slasher trilogy based on a beloved YA series, here are the best new scary movies on Netflix right now.

Netflix

Directed by Leigh Janiak and based on R.L. Stine’s Fear Street YA series, the Fear Street Trilogy, set in 1994, 1978, and 1966 respectively, follows teens looking for the Fier Witch who cursed Shadyside, Ohio, and why, on Fear Street, death keeps coming.

“People are drawn to Fear Street mainly for the surprises,” Stine said in a Netflix featurette. The author, who wrote over 60 books in the beloved YA series and sold over 80 million copies since publication in 1989, added, “I’ve killed off a lot of teenagers in Fear Street.”

Netflix

Before the teens discover the witch in Part 3: 1666, Part 2: 1978, takes place in a Camp Nightwing summer, where a previous massacre occurred. Released in weekly installments, the trilogy stars Kiana Madeira, Olivia Scott Welch, Benjamin Flores Jr., Julia Rehwald, and Fred Hechinger.

Another Netflix original movie, released on Friday, July 23, is the German film Blood Red Sky, directed by Peter Thorwarth. The airplane action film follows Nadja (Peri Baumeister) and her son Elias (Carl Anton Koch), who board a plane later hijacked by terrorists.

Netflix

As she tries to keep Elias safe, the terrorists shoot at Nadja, and she transforms into the vicious, blood-sucking creature she’s been suppressing for years and kills them all. She may be able to save her son from terrorists, but can her son save her from herself?

Netflix

Horror buffs with a penchant for demonic possession, good news: The 8th Night, the Korean exorcist horror film directed by Kim Tae-hyung, landed on the streaming platform on July 2. It follows the legend of a demon that Buddha himself exorcised and trapped 2,500 years prior.

Netflix

When the demon is released in the present, he needs to possess eight victims in eight days to fully enter the human world. Can two monks and a detective stop such a great evil from wreaking havoc on earth? The film stars Lee Sung-min, Park Hae-joon, Kim You-jung, and Nam Da-reum.

Netflix

Joining the ranks of horror titles like Midsommar and Hereditary is A Classic Horror Story, another chilling Netflix original film directed by Roberto De Feo and Paolo Strippoli. Released on July 14, the Italian movie is perfect for fans of the cult horror sub-genre.

Netflix

Starring Matilda Lutz, Will Merrick, and Peppino Mazzotta, it has all the classic trappings of a hit cult film: eerie markings, deity worship, and ingenious methods of human sacrifice. It also has a digital-era plot twist, but no spoilers here.
