4 Surprising AMA Beauty Moments

by Sara Tan

If Rihanna's slicked-down, unglamorous hairdo from the American Music Awards surprised you, you weren't the only one. Twitter exploded, criticizing the AMA icon's no-fuss 'do, accusing her of being lazy and leaving her hair in wraps. For those unfamiliar with hair wrapping, it's a technique done to keep hair from frizzing overnight. Fans of Rihanna took to social media questioning the 25-year-old's beauty choice.

However, not all of her followers were left angry (take a chill pill, @vincejai). Some of them praised her for being able to rock the bedtime look.

Here are three other beauty looks from last night that caused quite a stir among viewers, some great and some not so good.

Ke$ha

Ke$ha looked like a dreamy mermaid princess with her long, multi-colored pastel locks. While we don't think everyone could pull of this cotton candy dream dye-job, we think the singer totally nailed it.

Christina Aguilera

We're not used to seeing the Voice coach without layers of mascara and her signature red lipstick, so when she showed up on stage to sing "Say Something," we were blown away by her simple, toned down look. We think it helped everyone keep their focus on how amazing she sounded during her performance.

Lil' Mama

There was absolutely no question that Lil' Mama killed it on stage with TLC, taking over Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes' part. But, we're not sure it could make up for her Oscar-the-Grouch-green hair from last night's red carpet arrivals. She may have been going for fashion-forward, but we think she fell a little flat. We much prefer the gradient blue hue she swapped later on in her performance.
