Congratulations to Kendrick Lamar, who this morning confirmed his engagement to his longtime girlfriend Whitney Alford, with an announcement that was almost just as poetic as, like, every set of Kendrick Lamar lyrics you've ever heard. According to reports, Lamar and Alford were high school sweethearts, and they've been together ever since, about ten years. Pretty adorable.
Lamar has often spoken about how much he appreciates Alford's unwavering support, saying in a Billboard interview earlier this year:
She's been here since day one. I wouldn't even call her my girl. That's my best friend. I don't even like the term that society has put in the world as far as being a companion—she's somebody I can tell my fears to.
Oh man, so great. But, just when I thought I couldn't love these two any more, I heard the very simple statement that Lamar used to confirm that he and Alford are to be married, and it was all over. During an on-air interview with the radio show Power 105.1, Lamar acknowledged the rumors of his engagement, saying, "Yeah definitely. I'm loyal to the soil."
Eep! Wouldn't have guessed that seven words could warm my heart that much... which is strange, actually, when you consider all the times Lamar has used some romantic language in his music.
