J. Law Wears A Snake, And Nothing Else

by Amy Sciarretto

If you had a girl crush on Jennifer Lawrence before, it'll be escalating into a full blown love affair once you see her latest major mag photo. Jennifer Lawrence wore a snake and nothing else for Vanity Fair. The image of J. Law and a boa constrictor was shot over the summer for the mag's Hollywood issue and it's safe to say that the actress is wearing the snake; it's not wearing her.

Lawrence is naked as the day she was born, but the snake is strategically placed to enhance the power of suggestion. And while it appears that she got oiled up for the shoot, check out that light spot at the small of her back— it's just a lighting trick!

J. Law's Patrick Demarchelier-lensed photo is an homage to the famous Vogue shot of actress Nastassja Kinski, taken by Richard Avedon in 1981. Andrej Pejic also paid homage to the Kinski shot, which endures to this day, obviously!

Anyway, an actress draped by a snake — which, in this case, is actually a Colombian red-tailed boa constrictor that could kill her — is nothing new. We've seen this type of stunt many, many times before and just talked about this yesterday. From Rihanna swimming with sharks to Britney Spears playing with a snake while performing "I'm a Slave 4 U" at the VMAs one year, dangerous creatures have often factored into sexy, fashion-y images.

So why was Lawrence, of all Hollywood's elite, chosen to recreate what has become an iconic image? Oh, because she's freakin' awesome, that's why. Vanity Fair's fashion and style director Jessica Diehl said, "Jennifer has the perfect combination of strength, sexuality, and humor, and, above all, tomboy to pull this off." No arguments here!

You didn't think Katniss Everdeen would fear a snake, did you?!

Here are three other times snakes were accessories. I don't mind, as long as they are treated fairly and humanely on set.

1. Lenny Kravitz For Uptown Magazine

That's some necklace. Was the rocker's stiff posturing a result of fear?

2. Rihanna as Medusa for GQ

Forget snakes on a plane! RiRi wore one around her neck.

Brit's BFF at the 2001 VMAs was a snake named Banana.
