12 Iconic '90s Couples & Their Modern Counterparts
I think the reason that the '90s are such a special time for many of us now, is that it was the last generation that was untouched by social media and pervasive photographers and the TMI we get from celebrities today. There was still an inch of privacy and mystery to '90s celebs, especially '90s couples. Many of the actors and singers we know and love now were young and grunged out and so it's fascinating to see them back with their old boos, who often are also still in the business. For the sake of nostalgia, I thought it'd be fun to highlight some iconic '90s couples and compare them to their modern day counterparts of this generation, for those who feel like they missed out on the fun.
Even though nearly 20 years has passed since the '90s (wow, I feel ancient), the formula for romance in the spotlight still seems to be the same. As long as there are supermodels, there will be leading men and rock stars there to date them. There will be matching couple's outfits and family drama, and lots of passion, which can sometimes be messy, but always entertaining.
Sometimes in this day and age, because of the rampant '90s nostalgia going on, people might feel like they missed out on the most epic '90s couples, but there are more than enough modern counterparts that will probably give them a run for their money in history. Well, maybe, because these couples were pretty iconic.
1. J. Lo & P. Diddy vs. Beyoncé & Jay Z
Jennifer Lopez and Sean "Puff Daddy" Combs were hip hop's royal couple when they got together in 1999 after working on her album On The 6. She had a bodacious bod and was a triple threat, and Puff was on his way to becoming the entertainment mogul he is today, which sounds a lot like Beyoncé and Jay Z, if you ask me. I mean, you've got two extremely talented women with powerful names and two rappers turned moguls standing by their sides, defining what it means to be a power couple.
2. Sarah Michelle Gellar & Freddie Prinze, Jr. vs. Emily Blunt & John Krasinski
First of all, both of these couples look nearly identical. Both Prinze and Krasinski are tall, dark, and handsome actors, while their better halves are petite (sometimes) blondes, who have a reputation for being some of the sweetest ladies in the business. I love the fact that both of these couples are married and still together, and they are very committed to their family and adorable children. Now, these are some Hollywood couple goals right here!
3. Brad Pitt & Thandie Newton vs. Vanessa Hudgens & Austin Butler
Back in 1994, Brad Pitt was spotted with a little-known actor, Thandie Newton, who played his victim in Interview With The Vampire. In September of 2011, Vanessa Hudgens started dating Austin Butler, and they were also introduced while on a film set, for Hudgens' High School Musical. Aside the similarities in how they each met, you can't deny both of the couples' resemblance and attitude. Pitt and Newton only dated for about a year, but Butler and Hudgens are still going strong after nearly five years!
4. Lenny Kravitz & Lisa Bonet vs. Zoë Kravitz & Twin Shadow
If there is any proof of cloning happening in our times, these two couples might be our best evidence. Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet were a stunning pair in the '90s, known for their incredible style, and their daughter, Zoë Kravitz, is dating musician Twin Shadow, who oddly looks a lot like her dad in the '90s. They all have a similar bohemian style that makes it actually quite eerie.
5. Cindy Crawford & Richard Gere vs. Bradley Cooper & Irina Shayk
Cindy Crawford was just a 21-year-old model when she met superstar actor Richard Gere. They ended up getting married throughout most of the '90s, becoming the ultimate model/actor coupling of the decade. Today, actor Bradley Cooper is in a relationship with Irina Shayk, which feels very similar to Crawford/Gere. And they're all very attractive.
6. Victoria & David Beckham vs. Shakira & Gerard Pique
Outside of the U.S., soccer players are kind of the biggest deals in the world. The world almost imploded when Victoria Adams of pop phenomenon the Spice Girls hooked up with the hottest footballer in the world, David Beckham, back in 1997. The couple met at a charity football match, and this story rings very similar to another huge music star and her long-time soccer player boyfriend, Shakira and Gerard Pique. This couple met a the 2010 World Cup where she was scheduled to perform, and they've been together ever since. Oh, yeah, and both couples have a bunch of adorable babies.
7. Gwyneth Paltrow & Brad Pitt vs. Blake Lively & Ryan Reynolds
Gwyneth Paltrow and Brad Pitt were a golden (and literally, the blondest), couple in Hollywood during the mid-'90s. The couple met on the set of the film Seven and were together until 1997. Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds share a similar story. They met while on the set of The Green Lantern in 2010, stayed friends while dating other people, but got together finally at the end of 2011. Both of these beautiful ladies have launched lifestyle companies (R.I.P. Preserve) and have had as successful careers as their studly blonde counterparts.
8. Claudia Schiffer & David Copperfield vs. Gigi Hadid & Zayn
OK, OK, hear me out on this one. Even being super young when they dated, I remember "the magician guy" dating this super gorgeous and tall blonde model. Claudia Schiffer and David Copperfield were together for most of the '90s, and their aesthetic looks a lot like Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik on the red carpet. Hadid plays the part of the smiley and gorgeous leggy model to Malik's broody and handsome musician, who often pulls some disappearing acts himself. (Is it too soon?)
9. Britney Spears & Justin Timberlake vs. Selena Gomez & Justin Bieber
There is arguably no pairing as legendary as Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake in the pop world. While they called it quits way back in 2003, fans still want to believe that they will eventually get back together, and this relationship sounds a whole lot like Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber. Both Gomez and Bieber are successful pop stars in their own right, and have broken up and gotten back together, and the pubic can't get enough of them, even though they claim it's "over."
10. Cameron Diaz & Matt Dillon vs. Mila Kunis & Ashton Kutcher
Cameron Diaz and Matt Dillon dated from 1995 until 1998, breaking up after they filmed their movie There's Something About Mary. Their story is almost opposite of how Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher met, considering they got together many years after being co-stars on That 70's Show , but there are a lot of parallels. Kunis is known to be fun-loving, smiley, and positive like Diaz, and Kutcher and Dillon as actors with a wide range of film credits, from silly comedies to intense dramas.
11. Demi Moore & Bruce Willis vs. Jason Statham & Rosie Huntington-Whitely
Bruce Willis was one of the biggest action stars of the '80s and '90s with his role in the Die Hard films and become one half of a legendary Hollywood couple when he met and married model-turned-actor Demi Moore in 1987. They were together for a decade when they announced their separation in 1998. Jason Statham also has made a mark for his action films, performing his own stunts and being the anti-hero, particularly in the Transporter series. Statham has also been in a long-term relationship with model-turned-actor Rosie Huntington-Whiteley since 2010, and they announced in January 2016 that they were engaged. (The men's hairdos might also have something to do with this comparison.)
12. Tom Green & Drew Barrymore vs. Dax Shepard & Kristen Bell
A '90s couple that always confounded me was Drew Barrymore and Tom Green. The couple met in 1999 while they filmed Charlie's Angels, and they quickly moved in together before marrying in early 2001. The comedian seemed so mismatched with Barrymore, that I thought maybe opposites attract would work, but they filed for divorce only five months after marrying. On the other hand, comedian Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell have openly said how different they are, but after two babies and eight years together, I think they will go the distance.
Alright, so I know these new couples won't ever be anything like the originals, but these couplings will still have just as an important spot in Hollywood history — and probably longer relationships at that.
