'Zoolander 3' Could Be On The Way

by Allie Funk

It's been over 14 years since Derek Zoolander first dazzled fans with Blue Steel, and now the highly anticipated Zoolander sequel is finally coming out. In Zoolander No. 2, Derek and Hansel have to navigate a vicious new world of fashion in order to help solve and stop the murders of the "most beautiful" celebrities, who are all being assassinated with Zoolander's signature look on their faces. Considering how excited fans are for this upcoming film, it's not unreasonable to wonder if a Zoolander 3 will happen after this one. And if Zoolander 2 performs well, it seems only natural that the studio would want the opportunity to make a third film possible.

There hasn't yet been any word about another Zoolander happening, and considering the fact that it took over a decade for a sequel to come to fruition, it's hard to imagine a follow-up coming anytime soon. Besides, there are many factors that need to be taken into consideration when a potential sequel is being constructed, one of which is the availability of the most crucial actors. The first film had an all-star cast and featured a bunch of celebrity cameos, and Zoolander No. 2 is adding even more A-listers to the mix in featured roles. So if a third Zoolander film is to be made, it would require the coordination of even more schedules than last time. Take a look at what the Zoolander No. 2 actors have on their plates for the upcoming years, and then you can judge how feasible a Zoolander No. 3 would be.

Ben Stiller

Although Stiller has not announced any upcoming acting projects, he may be pretty busy for the next few years producing. According to IMDB, there are multiple possible projects for which he may be serving as a producer, including Space Jam and Dodgeball sequels. He is also producing an upcoming film called Why Him?, which will star Zoey Deutch, Bryan Cranston, and James Franco.

Owen Wilson

Wilson has already finished filming two other films which will be coming out this year, Bastards and Masterminds. However, he may be busy providing vocals for Cars 3 , which is scheduled to come out in June 2017. But perhaps he'll be free after that to put some pleather Hansel pants back on?

Penélope Cruz

Cruz has been jumping straight from one production into another, and it appears that may be the case for another year or so. She has finished shooting The Brothers Grimsby, and has the films Escobar and The Queen of Spain next in the queue. But since all of the above are already solidly in the works, once Cruz is finished with them maybe she'll have a gap in her schedule big enough for a Zoolander 3.

Will Ferrell

Ferrell has already wrapped on James Franco's film Zeroville as well as comedy The House (which will be released in 2016 and 2017, respectively). However, he is already cast in another project, Russ and Roger , which hasn't begun filming yet and which recently saw the departure of director Michael Winterbottom. So unfortunately, Ferrell's availability in the near future might be questionable.

Kristen Wiig

This SNL veteran's schedule might be the most difficult of all; although Wiig has already finished filming for multiple 2016 films (including Masterminds with Wilson), she is also already attached to other projects that are currently in the very early stages. Desired Moments is in pre-production, while How To Train Your Dragon 3 has been pushed back until 2018. It seems like this might not leave much space for the world of high fashion à la Zoolander.

So, it looks like the verdict on Zoolander 3 is a frustrating "Cannot predict now." However, it's not totally out of the question. If Zoolander No. 2 performs well in theaters, a third movie could be made even if not all of the prior cast members were available. So don't give up hope just yet; there may be more Magnum, Ferrari, and Le Tigre to come.
