Bey & Jay Are Hazy On The Details Of How They Met

by Michelle McGahan

Obviously one of the greatest romances of our time, Beyoncé and Jay Z are a power couple like no other. And while their daughter Blue Ivy continues to take center stage in both their lives and at events — never in my life will I be able to get over her beyond killer dance moves to "***Flawless" — their high-profile marriage is still one of the highlights of Hollywood and the music industry, divorce rumors be damned. As is the case with any relationship turned #RelationshipGoals, the public obviously needs to hear their meet cute story in order to satisfy their otherwise insatiable thirst for everything Beyoncé/Jay Z. So, just how did Beyoncé and Jay Z meet? It turns out that that exact moment (you know, the one where fate intervened and gave the world the magic that is ~Jayoncé~) is still something of a mystery to this day.

Being in the same industry and all, it was pretty much inevitable that the two would cross paths sooner rather than later. As for when this happened, according to Jay Z, it was in 1997 when he heard Beyoncé "singing like a rapper," as he told Charlie Rose.

"So the first song with Wyclef [Jean] she was singing really fast, and I was like, 'Why she singing so fast?'" Jay Z recalled. "And she was on a team, and everything. And I was like she’s a talented person."

Beyoncé has a slightly different version of the story, however, and told Seventeen that she met Jay Z when she was just a few years older. "I was 18 when we first met, 19 when we first started dating," she revealed. This is entirely possible, considering Jay Z was a little hazy on the details himself in that Charlie Rose interview, with the veteran reporter even giving the rapper a hard time about not knowing when he met his future wife. The "Pretty Hurts" singer later revealed to Oprah that their relationship so special is because the two were friends before things went down the romantic route.

"We were friends first, for a year and half. Before we went on any date, on the phone for a year and a half," Beyoncé said. "And that foundation is so important in a relationship. And just to have someone that you just like, is so important. And someone that is honest."

Jay Z told Vanity Fair that the two began officially dating — or in his words, "trying" to date — in 2001, around the time the magazine's Music Issue came out, which featured both artists.

"Well, you know, you've got to try first. You got to dazzle... wine and dine," he said of the pair's courtship, joking that the too-cool Beyoncé was "not impressed" at first.

Of course, all's well that end's well. The two would later go on to record "'03 Bonnie & Clyde" — a commercial success, one of the pair's most iconic tracks, and one of my most beloved songs from middle school — and, five years later, officially tie the knot in 2008.

While I'm still waiting for the officially official meet cute story from Beyoncé and Jay Z themselves (seriously, how hard is it to remember the exact moment you were introduced?) maybe this is something they'd like to keep to themselves for now, when so much of their lives are in the public eye.
